Thanks, will try them out.

(btw congrats to myadsl.co.za - it's a great site. Keep up the good work - hopefully the pressure from myadsl will get Hellkom to start charging reasonable rates for adsl that will convince me to finally get a landline)

google i kill you now....

aaaaargh, thought i would give googles desktop a try. installed it and damn it looked good. if you dont know it, it goois a lekker bar on the right with your gmail in it and your gtalk, and there are plugins to control your itunes, and the news and the weather etc and some VERY powerful search and indexing options. so the machine tunes its gonna index my stuff in the background when the machine is idle.... it took like 15 hours i think in total, thats indexing my pc and all my gmail etc.... and then i find out...... IT ATE LIKE NEARLY 500MEGS of my 1gig limit, and its only the 7th of the month..... aaaaaaargh. it must have been while it indexed my gmail, which i have gigs worth of mail..

BE WARNED.

I don't think Google Desktop ate your gigs ... best check you don't have something else brewing in there ...

I've been using it for ages including the new version.

yeah i doubt it too, ou should look for zombie bots, cuz you'll find if you're infected some kid in asia is using his botnet to DoS servers or something and that can chew alot of data, it might also be that someone else logged in your account (we've all heard the stories floating around)

get something to monitor all internet traffic like netlimiter so you can see what is using how much and when.

Also even if you have a fiull gmail mailbox it shouldn't take alot of data to index it

Help - My 3G connection is possessed !!

Am using NIS 2006 with Win XP Home.

No what's really strange is that I 'lost' about R60 with regards to my prepaid balance on me 3G from Sunday to today

With my PC being off - disconnected at the plug during the whole day - how is this possible

My usage stats have been freakish for the last 2 weeks - almost 100 meg per week - which is impossible . Am using 3G only for emails & website viewing.

Automatic Windoze updates & NIS updates are being done manually - not automatic .

Have scanned my PC - no bugs are reported !

Something running in the background ??

Yep - still on Vodacom 3G after I had said that I will switch to MTN . Seems like MTN is looking like the better alternative .........

Ta in advance for any recommendations

Rompelstompel

PS - Dare I ask - will prepaid data bundles be released sometime this year ??

Sometime this year....

Something is chowing your data, try and run netlimiter (http://www.netlimiter.com/) and see if you can catch it.

The single biggest data consumer on my laptop is Trend Micro.

8gig in 9 days

Dreading the phone bill.

Dashboard tells me I've used 8.07g in the first 8 days of the month. I don't do much except check email, use a couple of forums and some light web surfing.

What the hell could I have done wrong?

Cheers

Pete

I think you can expect a phone bill of about R14956 at the end of the month

That figure is based on the following:
1gig HSDPA package at: R620 (around about)
7 gig usage at R2/mb: R14336

Of course if you were on a 500mb package I would imagine the total being much higher.

So like ic said, get a firewall, use a program like Adaware-SE (it's free) and clean out your PC, also disable automatic windows updates.

Here are some links to software I use to keep my PC clean:
Adaware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
AVG Anti-Virus: http://www.grisoft.com/
ZoneAlarm (firewall): http://www.zonelabs.com/

All the above software is free, and it keeps my PC clean. I wish you good luck, you're gonna need it :p

Your dash board is a very bad indicator of usage Log on to vodacom4me.co.za and check your account there is pretty accurate

AVG FREE Anti Virus
BlackIce defender ( Firewall )

and have zero problems.
u can try that...
about your R15k bill....get offline now! or its goin to be 20k soon..
wish u luck.

V3G: what happens to a guy like this? isnt there a way u guys can see the traffic he has done and confirm that it was not his fault and then give him a break?

Vodacom cannot really bill him for traffic he didnt want in the first place. Especially R15 000 worth of malware traffic.

Vodacom should rather bill him what it actually cost them to deliver that trafifc. (SAT3 rates)

I wonder if there's not a P2P program behind this? LimeWire, etc.

Even Malware programs don't normally send out that much data....

I once started up a P2P app to get a file I needed and left it to download, forgetting that once it's downloaded every man and his dog can download it from you and you foot the bill.....

PeteB should have received at least 2 SMS's indicating he either close or exceeded his cap.

You can ask for a soft lock on your account as ic suggested.

A thought. If you are making use of a router for 3G (like the linksys 3G router), would the dashboard not record all traffic, even LAN traffic (ie traffic between locally connected PCs).

Since I have not got 3G, this is but a guess...

I can really recommend a free program called Magitime, I use my 3G phone as a modem so have no way of keeping track of the data I download. Magitime runs in the background and gives me a splash report of the session as it ends, otherwise I can also view reports per day, month etc.
It costs nothing and is about 98% accurate to the byte.

Sadly it will not help with the 8 Gigs already gone, this kind of thing really bytes a hole in one's pocket :)

DU METER also works very well in keeping records and giving warnings
