Has anyone else noticed this?

Hi all,

Has anyone noticed that the megs just flow away like water when you're simply browsing the net? Or doing something simple like administering an OsCommerce store... is it possible that you can rack up 50megs in an afternoon..?? I don't know why, but I have this funny feeling something is not right. Is anyone else getting the same feeling, or does someone have an explanation. Sometimes I just watch the status window as whole megs slip away into the ether when I'm doing not much more than a little browsing.

I have checked viruses, trojans, adware, spyware, and even installed Sygate to make dead-sure that XP wasn't doing anything strange behind my back. Windows Update is off. It's browsing and browsing alone that is eating away at my precious megs. But how can it be...???

Install Netlimiter and you'll see exactly which application is doing what, right down to which browser window is active.

If you're a little technically orientated you can also try Sysinternals TCPView (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/TcpView.html) or Sysinternals Process Explorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html)

Neither of them require any install and will give you a lot of info - I use a number of the Sysinternals utilities.

If you're very technically orientated you can try WireShark (Ethereal) to do packet capture and analysis on the traffic in and out of your card. You can get that at http://www.wireshark.org/

If you were using a WRT54G3G router, I would suggest making 100% sure by booting your heXPee machine off a Linux Live CD and seeing if browsing has the same usage effect from Linux...

Thats exactly what I find so great about linux. I have a dual-boot machine running XP and Ubuntu Dapper. When in Ubuntu, I get no unusual usage.

I'm not using any router unfortunately.

I had a virus which constantly sent mails out. My uploads were insanely high. Avast wasn't able to eliminate it. Eventually i changed to Avira Anti Virus (All freeware, i'm cheap) and used zonealarm as my firewall. So if you can, check if it's upload/downloads. Either way, a firewall will monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic. And if all else fails: format C:\

I had something similar, couldn't find any viruses, spyware etc., even formatted and it carried on happening. Eventually figured out it was svchost.exe, blocked it with my firewall and haven't had any problems since.

FWIW although I'm not useing a data card, my firewall has firefox: allow outbound ports 80 & 443 and any other sites that need a different port I have to set up a rule - which is very seldom but more secure.
