Help exeeded Office cap without permission.

It is because of people like you that need to download the web, that people have caps. If the cap would run over till the next month, then i would not touch it with your virus infested mouse. As the Company could use it on the rolling month.

But as the ISP have to pull some cap back from the people, because of hoarders like yourself., it gets taken away.
I can picture some Rich Granny being fleeced in a 2gig package to read her knitting updates.

Remember back when your Providers;
1) 3g cap was taken away because you never used it for the month, which you payed for.
2) Telkom would disconnect you from dialup when they had R7 all weekend connection deals, so you would have to re-connect for another R7.

Who profited?

Wrong assumption, I use 3g, 500meg (well now 600meg). I only use the internet for irritating hyenas like you :)

Your hyena analogy is correct, i scavenge the leftover bones at the end of the month only. Unless is poh hits the fan. No harm in that i see.
I suppose you are the person that puts an empty water bottle/empty milk carton in the fridge at work, instead of filling/replacing/binning it again.

So you are a hyena? At least you can admit it to me, what about your boss?

We have no milk @ work - we have budgets we follow :) But another assumption sorely missed.. If the kettle is empty I actually fill it up and switch it on... Hate people that are dishonest / don't fill up the kettle - just irritates me :)

It doesn't matter if it is the first of the month or five minutes before midnight on the 31st it's not your bandwidth.

This actually happened to me once, I downloaded a bunch of stuff for myself without telling the boss. He checked up on me and busted me red handed. I apologised and said that I would pay gladly for the bandwidth used. He smiled and said that it better not happen again, he didn't take the money for the extra bandwidth needed for the month. Now whenever I want to download something, I ask him, because it turns out that he would like to have it as well :) honesty is the best policy!

Yes it always has been & always will be :) :p :)

[devil's advocate]
After the office has closed on the last day of the month whose bandwidth is it? The company isn't going to use it, but has paid for it, so does that make it the ISP's?

Are the roses or pebbles in the parking lot the companies, or someone else's? Irrespective if they use it or not, since they pay for it, it's theirs. Who's coffee & sugar is in the kitchen at the end of the day? The company's, or the cleaning lady's? Just cause the company paid for it, and don't use it all doesn't mean it's not theirs anymore.

If the OP, or any other employee for that matter chooses to steal from the company then he should be fired. Or get charged (if not fined) for what was taken. He's a thieve, regardless of how colorful you try and make it.

The company paid for it, so therefore it belongs to the company, and permission should be asked first before using any company resource for private use.

I'm not trying to make anything colourful. I'm trying to have a debate on the ethics of using something that would otherwise expire. There is no loss to the company, or even to the ISP if excess bandwidth is 'stolen' on the last day of the month, so if there is no loss is it still stealing? I've not made my mind up one way or the other, but I know if it was someone reporting to me, I'd not be worried about the last day of the month bandwidth (because there is no loss to the company), but I would be worried about how the users were able to access it.

The roses, pebbles, coffee and sugar are physical and don't expire, so they're not really comparable. The used tea-bags might be a better comparison to use. They have no intrinsic value, but I hear that they make good compost for rose growers, and I've never heard of a company who would fire someone for taking used tea bags out the bin. The unused bandwidth is going to waste, and most companies I have worked for allow staff to help themselves to waste - but do put some controls in place to ensure that there is no abuse.

How about this then. If you walked into PNP tonight five minutes before closing time would you expect to be able to help yourself to any of the food that expires today and walk out without paying for it? How about one minute before closing?

What right does this guy have to help himself to the bandwidth that someone else paid for?

write a letter to your boss telling him that the bandwidth is not enough... you tried downloading some work stuff only to find out the cap is almost used up.

Put 4 gigabytes of random software on your laptop that you "want to learn". for "the advantage of the company"

use words like:
"getting ahead of the game"
and
"capacity building"

because you did a

"gap analysis of your skills"

I completely agree with you that the food in PnP is not free just before it expires. It's not even free after it's expired.

I also agree that you don't have the right to use bandwidth without permission. Where I disagree is calling it theft (assuming it's the bandwidth that would otherwise expire), because the bandwidth isn't something that actually exists. It's access to move a certain amount of data over a link in a specific time period. They say that there are no victimless crimes, and if that is true, then if there is no victim, then the act was not a crime. There is no victim, as there is no loss.

They do mark it down substantially, when it is about to turn. (Checkers) PNP as far as i know donates it to charity.

It is the owners right to have access to the bandwidth they have paid for right up to the time it expires.

Wrong. The boss still paid for it, and it's still his (or company's) property, whether it's being used or not. In fact, whether it's a "virtual product" or not doesn't make a difference either. HE didn't pay for it, so it's not his to take.

It's the same as the old servers we have in the store. Even though they're not being used anymore (too old), does it give any of my staff the right to just take them? Our company spend thousands of rands of the equipment and even though it's not being used anymore, it's still our property. Unless I give it away to a staff member, or something like that, it's still the company's property.
