Hi guys,

I did some research, but not sure which the ISP is the most stable one, I am currently with Telkom capped (10GB 1mb line) and I pay R450 per month, Is it possible to get uncapped for a similar price or even?

Thanks in advance

Thanx, but wouldn't it be cheaper if I order uncapped with another ISP? I basically use my internet only for playing games and downloads

Rexxar, do exactly as I say and you will come out on top smiling.

1) Ask Mr.Beep for a 1Mb Silver Trial account.
2) Test it. Thoroughly. During the day and night.
3) Test Usenet if that's what you use, or Torrents, Gaming, YouTube, whatever you usually do.

If your connection works great, continue here:

4) Get the 1Mbit Silver Uncapped special from OpenWeb, it's R199. There are 102 accounts left, although there might actually be less since the website doesn't update in realtime.
5) You get 2 Silver accounts with this special. Flog the other account to a friend of yours for R100/month if you can - that means you will be paying only R100 for an OpenWeb Silver account!

BOOM. OpenWeb Silver Uncapped for R99 per month... doesn't get much better than that!

-OpenWeb doesn't monitor your downloads or bandwidth consumed, and won't send you "abuse letters"
-They also don't mind if you download from Usenet using SSL encryption. other ISPs will usually ban you for trying to "bypass" throttling - OW doesn't care!
-You also get free Wifi from 1400+ locations around South Africa.

hope this helps.

PS: If you don't have a buddy that wants your other Silver account for 100 bucks, don't fret, even 1 silver account at R199 is a bargain.

Thanx Keeper, I PM'ed MrBEEP, u sure I can get a trial account to test it out first?

I have never heard of them before until now, are they relatively new to the market?

Sure he will, Most ISP's will give you a free account to test. (well, the ones that aren't trying to hide something)

If your OpenWeb sucks, well then all I can say is bad luck because then you have to go find another ISP which will probably be more expensive, have no SSL, no Wifi, and send abuse letters if you download too much.

Hopefully you won't have "bad luck" with your line and everything will work like it does with the rest of us OpenWeb users.

Hmmm hes not online tho, hope he comes on soon, I see that I get for the rest of march free if I sign up.
From what you are saying, OpenWeb sounds like the best option for me so far.

I also see that there is vanilla, standard, silver, etc accounts for open web, what are the differences?

Think of it like Restaurants.

You might have never heard of "Bordelo's Italian Pizza" either, but you definitely know Scooters/Debonairs.
Sometimes the "well known" brands aren't really better :p

90% of people don't know wtf usenet or SSL is, and just want to browse/e-mail, and go with MWeb because of the funny advert they saw on TV.

To be honest, I also dont know what usenet and SSL are haha :erm:

Shaping.
The higher you go, the less they may shape.

Basically, and this is just to explain it easier for you:
- a VANILLA "internet pipe" will accommodate 1500 users.
- a STANDARD "internet pipe" will accommodate 1000 users.
- a SILVER "internet pipe" will accommodate 400 users.
- a GOLD "internet pipe" will accommodate 200 users.
*not actual figures

The less users you are sharing an "internet pipe" with, the better.

SILVER is tier 3, so it's no normal internet, you will get quite high priority!
(I am on Gold, and NEVER EVER feel any shaping what so ever.... So Silver should really be 100% fine for you)

Note: OpenWeb will never throttle you - there is a difference between throtteling and shaping.

Throtteling: ISP slows you down because YOU are downloading too much.
Shaping: ISP is slowing torrents and usenet down for EVERYONE because of load on the whole network.

But, as I said, even though OpenWeb shapes (like all other ISPs), you will practically never feel it on their network.

That explains everything, last question few questions, were u ever at telkom? They charge "DSL fast bundle", "Telephone line" as well as "AllAccess 10GB", I assume the R199 will only replace the "AllAccess 10GB" if I switch to openNet?

I am with Telkom. you will need it as OpenWeb doesn't do bundles unfortunately.
But it's always better to keep your line with Telkom IMO.

We signed up for a Telkom Christmas special, where they bundle everything together (Phoneline, ADSL line + 5GB Data)

Needless to say, I have not even downloaded 1kb off my Telkom line - it's just going to stay unused forever. lol
(My OpenWeb line has never failed and never goes slow, so I have never really needed to use my Telkom 5GB "backup" since day 1)

to answer your question, you will still need the ADSL line, and the Telephone Line.
You can cancel the 10GB Data portion.

What's OpenWeb's connectivity like right now? I've spoken to their helpdesk and they say they're also affected by Seacom at the moment. Mweb is practically dead though, what's OpenWeb like at the moment?

Am considering your suggestion....
