Help: Installed new GPU, Computer fails to boot; reboots repeatedly.

Hi, sorry I can't seem to find another sub-forum or appropriate place to post this.

I got a new GPU and installed it in my PC. I installed drivers and restarted. When I restarted it turns on for about 15 seconds, then turns off and tries again. It does this repeatedly. It doesn't reach the point where I can access the bios.

The troubleshooting I have tried so far:

Unplugged all non-essential hardware.
Remove GPU and plug into the intergrated graphics.
Change from DVI to VGA cable.
Tried one stick of RAM at a time to see if it's the RAM.
Reseated all components including wiring and CPU.
Tried a different PSU.
Removed CMOS and Reset the bios.

After resetting the BIOS I got 1x Long Beep followed by 2x Short beeps. My BIOS is an AMI Bios and there doesn't seem to be a reference for that code, however it usually means it's GPU/Display related.

From my troubleshooting I would say it's the motherboard, but what concerns me is that it occured quite suddenly and at a point where I changed GPU. I'm worried about running out and getting a new board only to have the same thing happen again. Could it be a faulty GPU that has shorted the slot on the mainboard? The GPU was running fine until I restarted. The GPU still seems to be powering up fine when I try boot up. It's a brand new MSI GTX750ti OC.

Motherboard is an MSI PH61a-P35

BIOS updated?

Enough power for the GPU?

He removed the GPU and it still wouldn't boot.

If you're not getting to BIOS and you've tried a different PSU it's the mobo for sure.

What caused it to die is more difficult to answer.

Unless it's something silly like the CPU fan, is it plugged in and working?
 
Would you mind giving the full build and the card you're replacing?
Have you tried booting with the old graphics card again?

He wasn't clear on whether or not is posts on the On-board gfx. If it posts on the on-board but not with the new GPU it's either the BIOS or the power.
 
I had something similar happen the other day on a relatively new computer. Would continuously boot cycle before getting to the bios with the fans spinning up and down. Ended up being a stuck/faulty reset switch, just unplugged it from the MB header and all is good again.

had a stuck power switch once, and it kept doing that,

can you confirm by using another power switch, or diffrent PSu to see if the power is maybe an issue?
 
Hi, yes I first started with removing the GPU then all other troubleshooting was done with the intergrated graphics only. I haven't tried plugging in the old GPU and trying with that. It doesn't post even with GPU unplugged and only on-board gfx running.

I also tried unplugging the reset button but still no dice. I've triple checked and reseated every cable.

The BIOS was updated a few months ago, but everything has been running fine since then, plus during my troubleshooting I also tried removing the CMOS and reset the BIOS.

The previous GPU was a Gainward GT430.

PSU is about 4 months old now, it's a cheap brand 450w. Everything was running fine until I restarted so I think there was enough juice. I tried my old 350w with all non-essential hardware unplugged (so it was running on intergrated graphics and one stick of RAM) but it's still gives me the same problem.
 
I do wonder about the power switch though... not sure how I could use "a different power switch" unless I find another tower.
 
Ah... something that just occured to me.... maybe something to do with MSI OC Genie? Maybe I should look for the "OC Genie" button on the motherboard and press it...

The thing is if the issue was related to that I'm sure it would at least still Post and allow me into the BIOS.

Edit: Can't find anything in the Manual with regards to the OC Genie button.... and I've never used the OC Genie before so I really don't think it could be related.

Disconnect it from the mb and bridge the pins with a screwdriver.
 
Brainstorming:

1) Diagnosis should have been with your old gpu installed and the system exactly as it was before. Switching to integrated graphics might have confused something.

2) Weak PSU. This has been the root cause of so many undiagnosable problems over the years that it is always a suspect for me now.

3) Remove mother board battery to reset bios.

4) Set Bios graphics manually, not on auto.

5) When I installed my last graphics card, it created a conflict in windows between my discrete graphics card driver and my Intel HD 4000. This caused a black screen after the windows loading screen. I had to disable the HD 4000 in safe mode. (Just a thought considering that the last thing you did was install the driver.)

I think resetting the Bios would have eliminated this as a possible cause? I have also tried plugging in the old GPU now for ****s and giggles but still getting the same problem and same beep code (1x Long followed by 2x Short).

I did try my old 350w PSU with only the CPU, one stick of Ram, and intergrated graphics running, still gave me the same error so I think that would eliminate the PSU as a problem. I only got the 450w PSU a few months ago when I was starting to think of upgrading the GPU, so the 350w PSU should have worked just fine.

Another thing is if it's a case of a weak PSU then I'm sure it wouldn't have booted at all the first time I plugged the new GPU in.

Ya I never actually tried the OC genie thing, so I don't think that would be a possible cause. Also at the moment I can't even get to the BIOS.

This also happened to me in the past, but I learned from that particular occasion that sometimes when installing a new GPU you need to hold in the power button with the power cable unplugged in order to clear the cache.

Yes I actually unplugged everything there including the power LED lights. I tried a second time with the speaker unplugged as well for good measure.
 
Anyway, thanks for all the responses guys. I honestly think I've covered all bases in my troubleshooting and the only thing that remains is either the tower or the motherboard. I will buy the cheapest second hand motherboard (Socket LGA 1155) I can get my hands on and take it from there. If it still doesn't work I can sell it and try see if it's the tower or the PSU. On the other hand if it works then I'll try plug in the GPU and cross fingers.
 
Long shot: Take the motherboard out of the case and power it up on your desk. Maybe something is shorting out below the board that was caused by inserting the new GPU.
