HELP! Internet keeps losing connection! Line? Router? ISP?

They told me in another thread that G.dmt automatically changes to ADSL2+ when your exchange supports it. Mine changed just recently.

But I guess it could also depend on the type of router. My D-Link has several tick boxes for "allowed modes", and then the router chooses the best available one.

AfricanElement: attainable rate the upper limit of what your router can theoretically synchronize at, which would be higher than your actual sync rates.

Your SNR margin (6.8dB) is actually quite low for a 1Mbps connection at 58dB line attenuation. Does the SNR margin stay that low throughout the day?
I would've suspected a low SNR margin like that when you're synchronizing at like 3 or 4Mbps.

I would suggest that you try plugging in your ADSL modem directly into the Telkom line, and disconnecting all the other telephonic devices & filters to see if that makes any difference with your SNR margins.

It seems relatively constant. It's 6.6dB tonight, but its not a 1mbps connection its 4, or supposed to be. Tonight my Attainable Rate (Kbps): 1824 904

Never goes above 2000.

I think it might be the physical line, and nothing else is connected to it. I just wonder if it might be dust or something thats messed it up.

Hi guys my router also keeps dropping my connection every hour, the (I) light goes off and the dsl light just flashes for a few seconds, and the it gets solid green again, i have a telkom netgear dg843u,could it be my router or line, but telkom says that my line is fine.I am on a 4mg line with telkom but now its runs at 2.5mbs, please can someone help me.

guys, paying someone who is licensed to work on the area between the pole and the house to rewire it with a new twisted pair would surly help isolate the signal and improve the SNR a bit. or am i dreaming? :)

My connection is still dropping every night even after buying a new router. I'm calling in a techie on monday to fix this garbage.

Isn't only Telkom licensed or allowed to do that?

I've always wondered whether there are any other companies (not related to Telkom) which one could pay to completely replace outside wiring, since we all know that trying to get Telkom to do anything is futile.

These are my line stats at my business in Glen Marais Kempton Park, also using TP-Link W8960N. The sad part is real throughput never exceeds 300kBps measured either through a download manager or via speedtest.net. Average is around 150-180kBps and I've tried multiple unshaped accounts.

A case of an over subscribed exchange? Although Telkom, naturally, refute the claim!!!

And these are my line stats at my residence. Here the stats relate into performance though...

Hi guys, after getting Telkom to check my line multiple times I finally decided to buy the TP-Link router as suggested by Merenwenrago and Pada! Great router so far! I'm very happy with it. The SNR downstream margin is now sitting on over 14dB at all times. So thanks a lot guys. We'll see if there's any problems when the bad, rainy weather comes again in the summer.

Just another quick question guys.. Signal does not quite reach my PS3 which is a couple rooms away. What would be the best apparatus to buy to extend the signal? I'm not too sure what the difference between an access point and a range extender is either.
Any specific device you would recommend? I wouldn't mind getting another TP-Link product off www.dbg.co.za again! Their service was brilliant

A couple of rooms away as in 2? Should reach easily. You sure wireless is switched on and both antennas or screwed on to the back of the router? Also check under settings... wireless>advance>transmit is set to 100% (although I think by default it is)... This router is strong enough to transmit through 3-4 walls... and then some...

Does your PS3 support wireless N could be why signal is not reading it?

Both my routers transmits through like 3 or 4 walls even outside in my garden :) with G & N

Also does your house have only one floor, cause wireless hates going up apparently?

If you want to max your wireless speed 300 mbps get TP-LINK WA901ND 300Mbps Wireless N Access Point

If not get TP-Link WA730RE 150M Wireless Range Extender

or TP-Link WA701ND 150M Wireless Access Point

If it doesn't support n set your mode to bgn... 192.168.1.1> wireless>advanced>mode...

No my PS3 does pick up the signal, but not great. There are about 4 walls in the way (thick concrete walls!). It is on the same floor as the router. The PS3 says about 20%. I just wanted to have something that would make sure I get a strong signal to the PS3 or is 20% suffice to download updates at a decent rate and to play online? I also wanted to get something to extend the range because there is also very low signal upstairs when i try use internet on my laptop. It barely reaches my room which is one floor up and two rooms away.

20% is fine but 40% is better :) as long as your wireless speed stays above 4 mbps you should get 4 meg line speeds

What I find strange with my laptop it only supports b/g yet I get 150 mbps on wireless lol or maybe I got special update

Does an access point have to be connected to the telephone line? Or can one just plug that straight into a power source? Also, can one plug an ethernet cable straight from an access point to a laptop that does not have wifi for example? does it have an ethernet port for that?

1. You can plug the access point into the adsl router with lan cable or using wireless.
2. Only the adsl router has the connection for adsl.
3. Yes it has lan ports to connect your laptop to it if the laptop doesnt have wifi. Theres actually 1 lan port on it going at 100 mbps.
