Help me build a midrange gaming PC

Thanks for the advice so far boys.

So APU's, looks like its out.

I'll check that video out at home, ponder (youtube is blocked at work and my data bundle is depleted).

The Pentium G2358 is a great little chip for gaming and it's overclockable. I would put your CPU choice be the G and the i5.

With the Z97 MB overclocking the G2358 should be a breeze (should be able to get 4GHz with the stock cooler) and it will future proof him should he want to upgrade to newer (or current) i5 CPUs when the need arises & budget allows.

What do you guys think of:
Intel i5 4690 CPU
ASUS Z97-A Motherboard
Asus R9 270X Graphics Card
2 * Crucial Ballistix S XT 4GB 1866Mhz DDR3

Of course this would mean that I'd have to upgrade my PSU as its rated at 550w and only has one 6-pin connector.

Cheaper motherboard and go i7?

What happened to budget? :p

Looks pretty good! Cheaper Mobo (H97) and go R9 280

He doesn't have an OC CPU, don't think he's into the whole OC thing (are you OP)?

The H87 has a better sound controller, onboard HDMI output for 4k, an extra fan connector, 1 more PCI slot, and a better Power Phase design... Which are all relatively irrelevant :p The Z97 has overclocking going for it, which will also be irrelevant if the OP is not interested.

Thus, the final decision will be based on colour?! OP, do you choose the Red pill or the Blue pill? :D

:D

By the way, if I wasn't into the whole OC thing, why do you think I would have mentioned only having used Asus boards? :D

That being said, its been a while and I'm getting too old for that schit. I just need something stable :)

Hahaha also true. Asus products have been known for their reliability and overclocking potential.
I based my assumption on the fact that you didn't go for a "k" series CPU. Which you can still get if you want to overclock, but then the investment for a cooler also comes into play.

Alright guys.

I've narrowed it down to this mobo suggested by ponder
This GPU
Still a bit undecided on the RAM, but for now I'm looking at this

So, the only thing which I need some guidance on is the CPU, I don't think my (yet to be determined :D) budget would allow for an i7.

So which i5 CPU which offers some overclockability, even just a tad bit to increase its value for money would you guys recommend

The only processors in the i5 and i7 range that overclocks are the "K" series. i5 4970k would be good. you should also get a cooler if you decide to overclock.

You sure about that model number? I can't find it on google
