Hi guys my router keeps dropping my connection every hour, the (I) light goes off and the dsl light just flashes for a few seconds, and then it gets solid green again, i have a telkom netgear dg843u,could it be my router or line, but telkom says that my line is fine.I am on a 4mg line with telkom but now its runs at 2mbs, when i first upgraded my line to 4mbs it worked well for the first 6months but now i havnt seen 4mbs in long time, i tried a friends router and it does not change my speed but his router does not drop the connection. Must i change my router or what can i do. Please help because i can't take it anymore.

Yeah its probably your noise margin but we will need your line stats first.
Sometimes this can be fixed buy Telkom - I had a similar problem but I lived really close to the exchange.
I just got a Telkom techie to replace the cable comming from the pole into my property - I havnt got one DC since.

GL!

Hi,

"my router keeps dropping my connection every hour". Are you 100% certain that it happens every hour ?
Have you timed it ?

I'm asking because I had the same problem. The ADSL line would drop every 52-55 minutes....24/7. Turned out to be some fault on the DSLAM/PORT/EXCHANGE/WHATEVER and not the line.

Took a lot of dedication to get telkom to firstly acknowledge that there was a fault and secondly to get them to fix it.

Anyways, good luck.

ok here are the stats

connection speed- Down 1792kbps up 512kbps
line attenuation - Down 52,0 db up 25.5db
noise margin - down 7,5db up 12db
Hope that is enough information, hope it can be sorted out. thanks for the help guys.

Have not timed it but sometimes it happens more than twice in an hour, and then theres times that it will work well for the rest of the day and not disconnect. As well as my line fluctuates from 1meg to 2meg.

noise margin - down 7,5db up 12db

there we go is tad low and you bit far to get decent adsl, speed you could try a very good router see if you can get better sync speed.

Would the router help with my disconnection problems and my line speed, because when they first upgraded me i had a solid 4mbs line and now not at all.

hmmm it would maybe , best to get one to try, wont help you go buy new, d-link is good and billion

I will try my cousins siemens gigaset tomorrow, lets hope it helps, by the way what is an acceptable noise margin that i must look for.

Thanks for your help i rely appreciate it. i will try these out and keep you guys posted.

Do you perhaps have to Netgear DG834GUv5 modem? We have that specific ADSL modem at our church and I'm suspecting it to be the culprit as to why our 4Mbps ADSL connections drops or shows heavy packet loss.
The weird thing is that the SNR margin sits at 13dB, but it fluctuates quite a bit.

Have the same problem

Hi

Lol, it seems many of us are having this problem (my neighbor included-across the road different exchange) for the last +-4 days my router (and yes the "glorious" NETGEAR DG834GUv5) stats have worsened aswell (could be from cold weather and rain) my line disconnects often aswell every 4-5 hours and my line speed on the router has dropped from being 4096 kbps for the past 1.5 years to 4091 (yes i know its insignificant but that definitely tells me somethings wrong) and upstream from 512 to 507 Kbps and the past 2 days iv been getting packet loss and pages failing to load, also my Noise margin after it has to resync twice jumps anywhere from 8 db to 20.45 db.And i phoned telkom today to see if they could help but they said because im syncing above 1 Mbps they cannot log a fault has the package goes "UP TO" 4 Mbps. Advice would be really appreciated, also some added info:

The last weekend before this one (9-10 Apr) our line got hit by lightning and blew the NETGEAR surge protection (2nd time we've been hit (1st time blew the server but NETGEAR router survived)). Could it also be that the router is now pretty much damaged and would it be considerable to buy a new router to see if the stats become better. And line stats are:

Line Att: 41.00db (used to hover at 37) and 20.5 down and up resp.
Noise: 8-20.45 db (used to stay at about 12-14db) and 13 db resp.
speed: 4091 kbps and 507 kbps

Sorry for the long post. :)

Sorry i forgot to add that my actual download speed went from 3.6-3.7 Mbps to 1.8 Mbps

My church's Netgear DG834GUv5 also syncs at 4095 kbps down & 507 kbps up, and Adept said everything is in order, which can't be since it has to sync at precisely 4096 and 512.
We're also experiencing massive SNR margin fluctuations and I'm suspecting that the modem is the culprit.

Currently our SNR margins sits at 13dB and I'm getting pretty decent download speeds: 330kB/s+.

I thinking of replacing it with like a TP-Link W8960N 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Router @ R499 (excl VAT & shipping) or TP-LINK TD-8840 ADSL2+ Router @ R229 (excl VAT & shipping), depending on whether wireless will be used or not.

I have a NetgearDG834v5 and according to my router stats my line syncs at 8031kbps down and 639kbps up.Does the fact that it is not syncing at precisely 8032 and 642 suggest there is something wrong with my router or would my line be at fault?Have also seen a lot of good comments on the TP-Link Wireless and thinking of getting one too.

I think the 8Mbps profile should be something like 8192kbps down & 768kbps up or perhaps even 1024kbps up?
