Hi guys, I really can't decide on these two cards. the 4870x2 is R500 more than the GTX and this offers 20-25% performance increase on higher res.
I haven't yet found a solid head to head comparison. R500 is alot extra to put for me, but is this R500 investment worth it. Please help.

Get the cheaper one, since you're using the 6000+

The 4870x2 may be better at higher res with AA but only in some games...for instance far cry 2

The gtx280 is a very good card...

I cant believe the gtx's price has gone down by so much...

well, I think your cpu is fine...

HOWEVER, if CUDA, physX etc is what you are looking for, then the Nvidia is the card that should be for you...

If you game at high res, with loads of AA then the AMD card is the one for you...

you you gotta decide... But honestly, I think the AMD might just be a safer bet... It supports most of the DX11 features, and is the more powerful card... and with Havoc physics the more supported medium, I would be weary of Nvidia...

but, of coarse, it's up to you... it's your money, but if I were in the same place as you(I wish i were :D) i would go with the hd4870x2... and with the ability to play with such high AA is really a nice little feature :D

take a look at this :link

If you do not have that R500 and really want a high performance card, the GTX280 is for you. It'll also perform quite nicely in Crysis vs the 4870X2.

But if you do have that R500 to push, and can live with the slight degrade in Crysis performance at certain resolutions...then there is no doubt about it - 4870X2 would be the best option for you at the moment. Indeed a good investment.

Just my 2c

Thanks guys,
ok, currently I game at 1920x1200 (with the setup in my signature). CoD4 is everything max at this res.
I game with crysis on very high AA 2x and res 1680x1050. This lags very little but enuf to play the game.
So unless I'm running games at 2560x1200 (or whatever) I should stick with the GTX280. Also the new nvidia drivers seem to be better than the catalyst drivers. In that you can add another card (such as the 9600GT) just for PhysX.
Also My current motherboard only supports SLi. So sticking with the GTX may be the my best best.

Why does everyone always refer to Crysis when comparing cards? Everyone knows Crysis was made to favour Nvidia. CRYSIS SUCKS!!1! That said get a 4870x2. I'm running a 4870 and it's perfect. The picture quality is omfg beautiful. I could never go back to Nvidia.

Crysis? The 9600GT 512MB can't run it at full graphics. It runs out of video RAM.

FYI! Crysis uses it's own in physics engine(It doesn't use PhysX) and the fact that the ATI HD4870x2 will last longer should be your swinger... Most games don't really use PhysX, they use custom Physics engines or Havoc...

Also, the HD4870x2 has a much better AA performance @ high res... so at the res that you playing at, it would seem unchanged...

But the options yours... both are amazing cards

Damn, Didn't think about this. I know this CPU is aged now, but will it be a bottleneck for the GTX280 as well?

Yup it will.

I would suggest waiting for next month if your going to upgrade you cpu as intel is launching their new cpu's on the 17th of november.

Expensive they are but fast they are :p

I'm still waiting for final benchmarks and reviews regarding gaming performance before advising people to buy the new CPUs ;)

Well they could always buy old now and then next month comes they feel bad because these cpu's are so fast and they just bought a new cpu, so i would advise not buying a new cpu til nov 17th because intel is not going to release cpu's that are not faster surely. Never seen them release anything but way faster cpu's.

They need to release much faster cpu's or else people won't buy them if they are only 5-10% faster.
