Hi guys, I would like to say that this is a personal matter and nothing to do with the business!
so I advertised my Belkin n1 router the other day in the classifieds. They guy asked me a few questions on it which I had no idea what the answers were so I said google it.

The ad is the following: http://mybroadband.co.za/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/10647/cat/all
which clearly states "Belkin N1 ADSL 2 Wireless Router" and does not mention a modem nor do any of the pics suggest that.

He is now saying that I "cheated" him when clearly my ad says it is the router only and not the model with a modem. He is demanding his money back which I do not think is fair as it was a legit deal.
What should I do in this circumstance?

NOTE: This is my own 2nd hand router and not a business sale.

Thanks

What does he mean modem though, do routers come with a built in modem or what i am missing here?

when i think router i think adsl unless specified as something different.

Gateways connect to DSL or cable modems and share an internet connection among a group of computers providing advanced features ie firewall, access control.
ADSL 2 implies that it actually has an ADSL modem

If you mention ADSL, it seems to me like you're implying you need only that to connect to an ADSL line, i.e. it contains a modem feature.

If this is not a device with ADSL capability, then you should not put ADSL in the subject. I will also think this is a wireless router with ADSL capability you are selling. Just like the Billion 7300N I am using, which is a Wireless N+normal Lan router, and I can connect to an ADSL network (Modem+router).

You should only published what you know or at least specify the specific model you are selling to reduce confusion.

Word of advice, maybe you should REALLY go beef up your computer knowledge before you try to start your dealship here, it's not easy to make a quick buck by just having a few reseller account around if you don't really know what you selling and can't answer some basic questions.

PS, from the photo in that link I can not find any telephone port, so this is definitely not an ADSL capable hardware you are selling.

Refund the guy and learn from the mistake and you can easily sell him an ADSL router new for less than R800 anyway.
As a side note don't deal in 2nd hand stuff it end's up biting you.

It says ADSL in the advert title which to me implies you can connect it to a Telkom ADSL network.

Refund the guy.

When you say "adsl 2", it specifically implies a modem. A router without a modem has nothing to do with adsl. If you don't refund the guy, you ARE ripping him off.

I had a look on Belkin's site, there are two models relating to this:

#1: N1 Wireless Router : http://www.belkin.com/au/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=299175

#2: N1 ADSL2+ Wireless Modem Router: http://www.belkin.com/au/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=365203

From the pics on the classifieds section, it's quite clearly Router #1, the one that has nothing to do with ADSL [can even see it on the box screenshots there]. So the buyer is correct in feeling cheated. He was quite clearly expecting router #2, which is the ADSL one.

You basically mixed the two routers in your advert.

If it can't connect to ADSL then why is it in the title? Personally I would take you to task if you did something as sneaky as this to me.

Give the dude his money back and learn some more about computers bud, I know it sounds harsh but you'll be better for it in the long run.

Yeah the picture and the title don't match. If I was a noob and read it I would think that I could just plug the ADSL line in.... On a more serious note, perhaps you should not be selling stuff to the public? Not the first time this has been raised....

I have to agree with the others :( Sorry man...when I've gotten advice from you it hasn't really been all that relevant to my query. Reselling is a tooth and claw market. Your knowledge of equipment is what sets you apart from your competitors.

Yip,
Good advice and after sales service always helps.
I phoned a couple of my suppliers when I needed some advice, they gladly helped me.
