Hello everyone. I need some assistance in helping buying my very first car. I am looking at used cars on auto trader and my budget is about 40k-50k. I have found quite a few good cars that caught my attention but I do not have any experience with owning a car and don't know which will be better off. I also had to do a quick search of the most hijacked cars and since I will be getting a hatchback I am a bit worried of the choice I might make which will be a target for hijackers even though it's cheap.
I really found some good deals on Peugeot cars, they are sleek with beautiful design but I am worried about the car parts being expensive and since it's a french company, not sure if the parts are readily available or expensive if I might need to fix if I run into any issue using it.
I also did look at Honda, Renault, Hyundai and Nissan.
What advise would you give someone who's on a cheap budget and wants a used car? What product will be durable? What car parts are cheap and cost effective in repairs and servicing?

Your input will be very much appreciated. God bless

Just my opinion here.

I think you should save a few more months and up your budget, the chances you get a lemon at that price range is quite high. You can get a running car for that price but you dont know if it will break down continuously, which will end up costing more with repairs etc. You can get a decent older model i10 for 60k-70k

Jazz
Getz
Figo diesel

No, just...no.
Both my neighbor own Honda Jazz and from my research it seems to be a decent car, 3 Honda Jazz in one premises? Will definitely look into it thanks

Thank you so much, I can do 55k but saving a few more sounds good. But I can't get a decent car for 55k? By i10 you're referring to Hyundai I suppose.

I checked gumtree and there are some decent i10s in just above your range. I wasn't sure of your location so I searched all regions, Im sure you can find similar deals closer to you. Those are all private deals so you can negotiate but also you need to be vigilant for scams.

It look like that has been in an accident, the bonnet isnt aligned in the forward facing pic

You can get a decent car for R55k but the risk inceases
I thought the same, too cheap for a 2011 model and something must definitely be wrong with it and I did observe the bonnet not aligning well as I compared it with the same model that's priced at 80k. What car would you suggest if I have 60-65k ready?

a honda jazz is a nice car

strong motor and good fuel consumption

price of parts though might be an issue if something goes wrong

a toyota will be cheaper to maintain
I am really thinking hard about Honda Jazz, seems pretty decent. Is it available for my budget?

This may be a little controversial on this forum but anyway.

My previous car was a 2011 Nissan Micra Acenta 1.2.

Very light in fuel, ABS, 6 airbags and the engine was pretty strong. Had it for 2 years and the only issue I had was a battery which died and replacing the rear wheels bearings.

As a first car it’s pretty damned good.

i10s are also good, and the Jazz is a great car as well.

I would steer clear of anything French, anything with a big motor or anything with a turbo.

Thank you very much. I am about 5 mins away from East Gate Mall. Will look them up

I would find a local mechanic who people trust, and ask them to look at any car you wanted to buy.
You'll need to find one anyway. Facebook can be a good source of recommendations for area specific advice, at least on that regard.

No French cars. They suck. Had a Peugeot at one point, which I gave to the GF to drive. She destroyed it, but it was still horrible to drive.

Haven't heard anything good about French cars, everyone complains about Peugeot. Does this apply to other french cars like Renault?
