What about finance?

50k- 20k deposit

30k divided by ~R3700 with insurance. For a car that's about R150k.

Will last about 8 months, if you can set aside at least R4000 p/m then you are good to go.

Stay away from VW as they are hot cars for thieves.


Pro tip, just make sure you can actually drive and park before buying a car. Too many people who cant drive for sh*t are on the roads.

If I could finance it then I would but I am a photographer and don't earn that much per month, self employed. I have hodled btc for a few years and think I need to get myself a decent car and won't be driving daily. My budget is 40-60k.

Yeah they would hijack more toyota's as they sell more toyotas than anything else and toyota cars actually spend time on the road and not at mechanic lol

Though its mainly hilux/fortuner

Makes you wonder if it was ever serviced. My i30 has 100k more than that one and has been practically flawless in the time I've owned mine
 
At that budget I would definitely go for the Honda Jazz, just look for one with a good service history, don't worry too much about the mileage, they were designed to last forever.

Nothing wrong with the Getz if you can find one in good condition. Stick with the Korean and Japanese. Peugeot and generally all French cars at that price range would be models from the era when French cars were just trouble, stay away.

What to avoid: Exotic cars, very old & high mileage luxury cars.

Thank you very much. You hit me hard with your response which is direct. I was actually looking at the exotic cars which are cheaper and questionable. What small Japanese naturally aspirated petrol engine car would you suggest?
 
A Tazz is a good car but it's one of those cars that are more appreciated when it's given to you for mahala by a nice aunt or uncle. I just cannot fathom the thought of anyone buying one in 2020, unless you live in the middle of somewhere in deep rural areas with no tarred roads.

A Toyota Yaris or a Honda Jazz would do nicely.

What about American cars? Ford, Chevrolet? Are they any good? How about Nissan since its Japanese, is it any good?

Nissan is okay, Ford is good when it works, it can make you do things when it doesn't work.

General Motors is no longer in the country so it's generally a good idea for anyone in your position to stay clear of Chevrolet.

Personally never had any issues with Renault. We had a Scenic, Sandero and currently have a Kadjar.

Usually they have lots of electronics on board (most new cars do these days), so if you buy one you need to have it on a maintenance plan or have a good mechanic. Unfortunately for your budget I think it would be best to avoid Renault since you might end up with an older car and battle to get parts.
