Hi guys,

Need some help, I am going out of my miiiiiinnnnddddd :(

Basically, I work for an international sales company. Its a small family run company who has grown over the past 10 years. I have been with them for past 3 years! I enjoy my job but get the usual frustration every now and then of a small growing business.
Over the years I have grown quite close to the owners of the business and we have worked well together, that said I have made them millions over the past couple years.

The dilemma now is that a competitor company has approached me a couple months back and offered me a bigger position with double my salary - I turned this down back then after much deliberation.

This company has now returned offering nearly 3 times my currently salary, a offer which I didn't think I would ever see in my life...... its huge!!!

I'm going mad thinking on what to do, so I leave it up to you's.

1.Do I stay with the company that took me into the industry, thought me all I know and groomed me to where I am today. But will remain with 'comfortable' salary

or

2.Move to new company, which will kill all relations with current employer as competitive industry, but live a very lavish life moving forward??Im talking sports car, holiday's ect

Whats your thoughs!

Don't do it - your company did this to test you.

you will sit on the street next month don't do it man!!!!

give me this "new company's" phone number so I can do some espionage for you, to find out what's going on.

please?

Best thing to do is be open and honest with your current employer. Tell him you have been approached and are going to leave because the salary is excellent. Do this out of respect for him and he may even surprise you.

If he doesnt offer you anything he obviously doesnt need you or doesnt respect your contribution to his company. In that case, leave him high and dry and as always, look out for number 1...yourself!

I'd jump at the chance at 3 x my salary - however I would also be nervous of being left out on the street in 6 months :/

Does your current employer know about the double your salary offer you rejected?

Look at it this way. What does a dog get in return for being loyal?

Talk to your current company about your situation, but I wouldn't want them to give me a counter offer.
Like you said, you made millions for them, and they taught you whatever you know. So basically you don't owe them anything, they don't owe you anything.

Take this new job. Leave the company peacefully though.

Are you kidding? It's a no-brainer. Take the new job. Times are tough and opportunities like this don't come by often. You're lucky. Don't waste this chance to create a better life for yourself and your family.

Ask for a share in your current company or ask them to match your new offer, show them both,,,, if they dont care, move on!:)

It's not really a decision... as with everything in life, when you really brush away all the PC crap, at the end of the day it is all about looking after number 1! If your existing company were to go under you think the owner's would support you financially or say sorry but good bye?

I too have a problem of being too loyal. It has it's disadvantages. But bear in kind the grass may not always be as green as you hope on the other side. You may well find yourself working three times as hard for that triple salary.

Best bet is to be upfront with the current employers and tell them that you have received an offer you cannot refuse. Best case scenario they offer to match it, worst case scenario they can't but you leave on fairly good terms and can go back tail between your legs if things fall apart at the new job... :)

Agreed,
You have worked with them for awhile and all get along etc...
Staff moving on is a way of life and they will most likely understand you leaving for a position like that. The best you can do is not burn bridges when you leave. Show them the offer (u might leave out the company name though) and tell them its impossible to refuse something like that.

+1
At the end of the day, you do need to do what is best for you...

Go speak with your boss. Put the cards on the table. If they thought you important enough an asset to their company they will match or better the other company's offer.

But now I'm thinking. Isn't it illegal for one company to make offers to someone who is already employed and bound by a contract? Think it is. Your current boss may be able to sue your new one. Imagine that!

Since when? The prospective employer is not bound by any contract. Surely not?

nope, never heard of that one before, most people generally go directly from one job to the next, as in acept an offer from anothe rcopmpany whilst still in the employment of another, nothing illegal about that.

If you don't have any dependents then go for it. 6 months x 3 times your salary means if you don't have a job after 6 months anymore you would have made enough money to look for a different job for another 12 months if you keep your expenses the same they are now at your comfortable salary

+1 for open discussion. sounds like you did your fair share (if not more) for the current company. you have been given a great oppurtunity, don't feel bad for taking it.

+2 for broader work experience

I would jump. If you are as good as you think and your current company knows it, you can always come back. This also depends on how old you are.

If you do not take the new job, you will never catch up to what you could have earned and you will always remember the oppertunity that you missed. They do not come along often. Even if the other job does not work out for you, the experience will make you a better employee.

Thanks Peeps,

2 pages of posting and no-one thinks I should stay at old company, guess I have my answer.

Its going to be pure evil breaking the news. Its not just that im leaving to a new company and thats life............ the industry we work in is tiny so products are very similar and customers are the same.
So they will be loosing an entire region of business ( I manage entire sales from east and southern africa alone) until they replace me and get new person upto gear, I move to new company with all client relationships and valuable info. Its gona be a major blow for current employer.
I know they will not be-able to afford my new salary, at the new job il be earning in line with my bosses boss.

Dont you just hate these big decisions, so many if's but, for all i know the new job might be horrible and im on the street in a couple months.
This is 1 of those moments where I wish we can fast forward time!!
