I was wondering if anyone out there can please help me. I've come to a point where I do not know what else I can do. Here's my story:

Three months ago I decided to upgrade my landline to a dsl line. I was told that they could do this for me and it took a month for them to install. My ADSL worked beautifully, but unfortunately there was way to much noise on the line to understand anyone who phoned, despite having POTS filters installed. They came to fix the noise problem 3 days later and since then my DSL has been unable to sync.

It's been 2 months since then, I've logged 9 calls with Telkom, escalated the problem 3 times, complained on Hellopeter.com and no one is able to help me. The technicians most of the time just close the problem without fixing it, and when they do come to my house they just disappear (or sneak away) and leave with out fixing the dsl (and then close the call).

The technician that came yesterday to my house told me that at the exchange my dsl syncs, but when he tests it at my house, with his router it doesn't sync. He told me he doesn't know how to fix it and just left.

I really don't know what else I can do or who to contact? Escalation clearly doesn't work as you never hear from Telkom again. Technicians never call you and when you phone the call center all they can do is open or update a call which just starts the loop all over again.

Just an extra note. The exchange is right next door to our property and everyone else who lives on the property has ADSL.

In Nelspruit

Phone Telkom Head Office switchboard
Ask them to look up your area office number on their global address book.
Phone the office and ask who the area manager is, and if you can have his number. If they won't give his number, phone switchboard again, and ask them to look up his name.

Now you have a direct contact person to phone and moan to every hour, on the hour until your problem is fixed.

Have you tried with no filter and just the modem connected ??
Just report the phone every day then it will escalate to the ops manager after the third report ( supposed to work that way )
PM this guy may be he can help you http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/member.php/30133-ranger

Yeah I tried that, tried it without the phones in, even bought new filters. Tried different routers and tested them at friends to make sure they work. As for calling every day, I've done that too. The only good that did was, was they sent out some "professional" guy to investigate, but he said is wasn't allowed to touch anything. That was about 4 weeks ago and nothing every came of it.

As i said, the exchange is less than 1km away from me. They get a sync on my line when they test it there, but at my house they cant get a sync. So somewhere on that 1km stretch is a problem.

What odd is, is that in the 3days my dsl worked, there was so much noise and scratching on the line that it was impossible to hear the person. So when they fixed that the dsl stopped working so my theories are:
-that the cable is damaged somewhere
-the cable has gotten water somewhere or near electrical cable
-wiring is crossed or problem with crimping
-or there needs to be some sort of filter before it come into the house

Find out where the Telkom technical yard is in Nelspruit (where all the bakkies park at night). Go in and demand to speak to the manager or operations manager in charge!

Good ideas! They seem less drastic than the hostage situation I was about to create.

You have got a severe cable problem. This won't go away with techs visiting your house, this is a waste of time. From what you say I would think it is a partial disconnect. They need to pull through new cables from the point before where the problem originates. No additional filters are required.

I was wondering how long I could expect to wait for Telkom to replace my line, then i read this post that suggests how I can speed things up.

Unfortunately, I can't do anything about line issues. I can help with TelkomInternet-related issues, and possibly SAIX issues, but for my own line issues I phone 10210 :-(.

Telkom have a number of different divisions -- the techs that come out are not necessarily "draad-trekkers" ie cable guys

The division that does cable pulls is not your normal guy that drives around in a Telkom van

You need to turn the "draad-sitters" into "draad-trekkers"

:D

I had the same problem, really bad crackling line but decent internet. Just kept phoning Telkom and complaining until they eventually fixed. Moved my line to Afrihost and haven't had problems since.

-I had an issues with Telkom at the beginning of the year - pillar to post scenario...reached the point of total frustration, that brought calmness....-logged a complaint with ICASA...- not the fastest of our State Agencies...but at last, got a reply from them, and miraculously TELKOM was calling me to sort out my ongoing issue....-bit of patience and you will get a result!

Changing ISPs won't impact on the crackle on your line...
