Hey

so finally took the plunge and upgraded to 8.1 from win 7

didnt take me too long to get the hang of the interface but i do have an irritating problem

My WD ext hdd (3TB my book) keeps disappearing after a few minutes

I think i had the same problem on my win 7 but i changed the power options and that sorted it out.
On 8.1 i created a new power option and changed the settings for HDD to "Never" same for sleep mode but that doesn't help, it still disappears.

can anyone assist ?

yeah i have been installing all the win updates if that makes a difference.

could it be a driver thing ? i made a mistake and just re-installed my previous drivers from a back up instead of re-downloading them for the new OS <-- not sure if that's the cause.

i just left the drivers the same as they seem to still work

Device Manager: Disk Drives > Your external HDD > Power Management > uncheck "allow windows to turn off this device to save power?

Install Classic Shell and get a 'Windows 7' taskbar and Start menu, as well as boot directly to Desktop option - and say goodbye to the Modern UI tiled app interface forever!

Windows 8.1 already boots to desktop. Besides this guy is asking about a missing hardrive, not whining about being able to start and find apps quicker.

The windows 8.1 taskbar is also superior to the windows 7 taskbar, especially with multi monitor

Utterly useless advice. You are obviously quite unable to learn anything new, but why encumber others wirh your own limitations.

OP, ignore the advice. Out will do nothing to resolve your problem.

Have you checked the power settings on the WD MyBook?

Log in to the MyBook using the browser, click Settings, and see that the Sleep and Power options are as you want them.

+1 , not relevant

seems to have resolved itself after a while :D couldnt seem to find the power option under device manager/disk drives/my wd ...
anyway just glad it sorted.

i did actually install classic shell but uninstalled it a day later, i actually dont mind the new layout and got used to it within a day.
a few hours of playing around and i'm very comfortable with this OS, i should have upgraded a long time ago

definitely regret not doing so earlier
