Hermanus riots

It's a lovely town and the people are very friendly and welcoming. And I mean from every community and walk of life. Don't be deterred by this incident, it could and might just happen anywhere.
Exactly, We are friendly people( White, Black & Colored.)It's my home town I'm moving there next week after 5 years working in Cape Town. A great place to live in.

Context..

The green is the area that was invaded.

The yellow is the existing RDP housing.

The red line is Schulphoek Road where apparently an area has been agreed on.

I know this kind of action is all wrong and this is seriosuly not the way to go about things, but I have to say, Zwelihle is hemmed in and looking at the amount of housing provided already is pretty pathetic.

Yes, people have to earn to build and nothing is for free etc, but in every country in the world there is a need for affordable housing in city centres and for example in the UK, it is provided by local councils and rent is paid accordingly. As a friend put it, there are lots of jobs in London but no one who works in a shop etc can afford to live there.

Food for thought. Municipalities and government need to do more. It's not all about something for free.

This country is fekked.

Not to be pessimistic but this is true though it will take a while.

Why? People living in poverty are having 5+ kids so that they can get child grants from the government. So the kids are brought up in poverty without proper education or hope for the future so they also grow up and end up living on grants and want free land, housing and services. This will just get worse and worse until the the taxpayer cannot afford to pay for the other 90% of the countries needs. Civil unrest and riots will escalate over time. The government in the meantime will string people along for as long as they can by providing to a lucky few.

Ignorance as they say, is bliss.

It is , but I’m not ignorant. Just admitting that I do live in a bubble, just like everyone else does.
I’m well aware of what’s going on and in my opinion SA will keep improving for everyone if we can correct the imbalances of the past.

Hermanus has grown , I remember around 1980 the resident population was only 2000 people , jumping to 22000 holiday makers in season.

This is a common claim that appears to simply ignore the fact that having big families was the norm. When black nurses baulk at giving someone contraceptives and treat them like they're doing something wrong not having a large family I find it hard to believe their motivation is to encourage the use of child grants. So while there may be some misguided people who keep getting pregnant to get more grant money it seems unlikely that this is representative of the bulk of the population.

There are also laws requiring developers to include a certain percentage of cheaper housing in places like London. The laws are inadequate and scumbag developers do their best to circumvent them, but they are a good idea and they do help, providing both housing for those who earn less and forcing richer and poorer into close proximity.

South Africa appears not to be doing even that much. It is supposed to be happening, but then I read stories about developers putting up so-called affordable flats that start at over R1 million for a shoebox, because it seems to rely on the developers doing the right thing.

Looks like the riots were ANC & EFF sponsored:

The #ANC and #EFF are deliberately destabilising the Western Cape Province by leading land grabs and violent protests. In this pic, an ANC leader clearly calls for a "decisive campaign." South Africans we are in trouble. The situation in #Hermanus is ANC-EFF sponsored.

Western Cape Leader Madikizela revealed in @WCProvParl today that #ANC Western Cape MPL and a ANC Faiz Jacobs in this province was party to orchestrating events in #Hermanus. I asked the question and Member Madikizela confirmed my interpretation of events.

Looks a bit too convenient to me. I'm holding judgement on this being true.

Yes it reads like "fake news" typically would. Then again I have no doubt that the EFF/ANC are actually behind this, just not sure the whatsapp screenshot is real.
