High-end rig for SolidEdge V20

What Ponder said.

Rather buy the components yourself and get a friend someone to put it together if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

I've been building PC's since I was like 12, when I had me first XT

Conrad, I hear you.

We have a brand new rig with 2 x Xeons in an MP boardm with 8Gb ECC RAM. The machine is an absolute DOG with SolidEdge. We spent almost R50K on this machine, and it performs worse than an average quad core (single Intel CPU) with 8Gb DDR2 RAM. The machine is a branded HP unit with a good Quadro FX card in.

If we go for a higher-specced HP machine it would blow the budget :)

The problem I have is that the Xeon 5430 is not a slow processor, and the quadro 3700 is not a slow card. On paper, the old rig knocks holes in the new rig - yet you say its slow; which leaves two options:

You get the new system, which on paper is no better than the first system and it works no faster;

Or, you get the new system which should not be faster and it is faster....

Does Solid Edge use all the cores? And are you sure it is not a configuration problem or some other error on your old system making it slow? I can lend you a Dual Quad Xeon to test/compare before spending more money on a solution which (in my opinion), may not work....

I would start in the Asus dual processor boards like the Z8PE-D12X. Support for 96GB ram and if you're modelling then you need a hell of a lot of ram. This board supports the Xeon 5500 series processors. This board is a few hundred rand cheaper and the only difference I can see is that it's a slightly older chipset Z8NR-D12.

This first 5500 series Xeon processor that has more than 4MB cache is the 5520 which would come in at around 10K for board and processor maybe a little more. You can run only one if you like and add another if it's a little slow but does the app support multiprocessor and multicore?

You could order via Dell, the PC will work out to be around $10000.
