Hi all,

I have a strange setup for my ADSL and I'm wondering if its increasing the noise on my line. Below is a picture of my setup:

I know its a mess, but theres a good reason. The ADSL line goes into the Telkom 5102G router (on the right). This router's Wifi is broken, so a LAN cable is connected to the MWEB router (on the left). This router only accepts MWEB accounts (I'm with Telkom) so I can't use it as the modem. Another LAN cable is connected to the Telkom router and fed into the main house to another MWEB router (same problem as the other one) to provide Wifi to the main house.

Seeing as there's plenty of wires, cables, power plugs etc all going around that area, could it be interfering with my line at all?

These are the figures from my router:

Downstream
SNR Margin: 12.5db
Line Attenuation: 51.5db
Data Rate: 1952 kbps

Upstream
SNR Margin: 12db
Line Attenuation: 31.5db
Data Rate: 512 kbps

Telkom are coming out to see if there's a problem on the line causing the 50+db Line Attenuation, but I'd like to know if my setup is also causing havoc.

Thanks

Nah, what happens after the first router has no effect on your line.

You should look into flashing the firmware on those locked in mweb routers.

Thats what I thought, good to know.

I tried, didn't seem worth the effort in the end. I will be buying a proper router soon though to replace that setup, and then still have the other Mweb router in the main house.

Your downstream attenuation will be based on your distance away from the exchange. You should be roughly 3.6kms away.
There might be a line problem if you much closer than that.

Try and move your LAN cables away from the power plugs/cords. They are known to cause issues with transfer rates if too close.

Turns out I am 3.5km away from the exchange. Telkom shouldn't be advertising 4mb for our place then :(

You still should be able to achieve the 4meg at that distance if Telkom cleans out the copper pair 100%.
Its not impossible

We already tried - we had 60+db noise and the connection constantly dropped. So we're stuck on a 2mb in a house of 5 people :erm:
