Hi there, i was wondering if anyone could please help me.

I'm on 384K ADSL with an Afrihost 5GB account. I've had no problems up until yesterday. While playing COD4 my ping is usually 40-45ms but yesterday and especially today, it will randomly go up to 200+ and just as suddenly will go down again. No one else is using the line when it happens. I have a D-Link DSL-2500u router. The problem seems to happen at hop number 8 when it goes to telkom-ip.net.

Here is a tracert:

Hi BiowolfZA,

I don't think that it is in mauritius. I think that the registry office (like RIPE) is in Mauritius. But the IP address is definitely assigned to SA. More info below:

196.25.127.181 is from South Africa(ZA) in region Southern Africa

As you can see....it is a telkom (SAIX) IP for the range '196.25.127.0 - 196.25.127.255'

Im getting the same problem... im normally 75-85 and for the last week it has been going to 200 or around there. when i emailed afrihost they told me that i must tell telkom to re synchronise my line, i did that and i restarted my modem and the same story..... if afrihost is the problem, why dont they just be honest?? i mean, iv been with them for around 3 months and never had a problem and now when there is 1 they lie? i know mweb had just announced ther 220 uncapped service today and i decided il stay with afrihost because i am happy with them and i know they will sooner or later come out with a better deal... im now thinking at the end of the month when my cap is done, il probably go over to mweb and then in the future to digichilli.... im going to give afrihost one more chance tomorrow and if its not sorted out or if i dont get a direct answer, cheers.

I've also started getting high, unstable pings as of yesterday. At first I thought it was my afrihost but I then proceeded to try 3 other accounts with various ISP's all with the same result. Some a lot higher than others but all were unstable. This is very odd.

What area are you guys in? I'm in Randburg. Could it be a localised problem?

If the latency to your first hop (in a traceroute) is fine, then there's nothing wrong on ADSL -> DSLAM -> BACKBONE

However, if the first hop reports poor latency, engage telkom to fix the latency problem. Good luck with that by the way.

Arrrghh there is a huge delay on the initial hop.

I Have the same problem . Local ping almost 120ms since about 2 - weeks ago Afrihost account . Bandwith is from IS seems the problem is there . Can't even play MW 2 any more ... This is the tracert Result I got.

High pings

Well, I am trying to play BF Bad Company 2 on the SGS servers too and I must tell you, the last week's pings are in access of 600ms using a Telkom ADSL account.

Here are the stats, that doesn't look too bad when not in the game:

It does however seem that the .co.za servers as well as the actual server IPs are not resolving properly.

Any guesses, ideas or comments?

There are many of these threads already (even one started by me) and it's all IS bandwidth so far. Email your ISP and bitch and moan, if nothing gets done, leave them and switch to SAIX bandwidth. WebAfrica have forwarded my complaint to IS, let all of you do the same thing so that something gets done.

Tonight it look a litter better.

Stupid question: How can I tell which speed ADSL I am (supposed) to be using? The login to Telkom contains [email protected]. Is this the old 512Kb that became 1Gb and then 4Gb? Or is it plain 512kb?

Nope, not just IS.

Look closely at jacosmit and you'll notice that he is using SAIX.
Jacosmit, for how long has this been going on ? (I see you're in centurion, I'm close to that area and also have ping issues)

Have you had your port refreshed? Sometimes that can fix the problem. I actually had my port reset (got a different one) coz that was the only thing they could do in the end. Just be on their case everyday with your reference number and hopefully enough bugging gets them on the case.

Well, I logged a ticket. being typically South Africa, I expect a call in a month.

In the mean time, I have done some speed tests. Even if it is supposed to be a 512K line, it doesn't quite make it...

Yip. I logged a call last night and I must admit that the internet was flying. My first hop after the home router was in the region of 30ms again...
until tonight. It is back to between 300ms and 600ms.

O, the question about my line speed was answered after looking at the statement. IT'S A PALTRY 384K  line. No wonder I am so buggered.

Can anybody give me an idea what the internal game ping to the Bad Company 2 SGS (SAIX) games server are when using a 512Kb or 4Mb line?
