HIGHER ADSL SPEEDS - GETTING IT?

Getting more than 4Mbps on your ADSL line since August 2010?

What are 384kb users getting upgraded to? It will be wrong to just upgrade the 4MB users, but hey its telkom....

Those line stats don't look fantastic,especially the Noise Margin yet your line is stable.Are you sure those noise margin stats are right?
If they are I am asking Telkom to bump me up to 9meg from 8meg!!

Well, its stable :D Playing online is great and I dont have any issues!
I dna, but I think my line quality is very good!
 
I sync at 10Mbps fine but whats weird to me is that in the morning its still at 10Mbps but when I get home its between 8900 and 9800Kbps, then I restart the router and it syncs at 10Mbps again... The connection is perfectly stable and doesnt drop or anything but when I get home from work its resync'd itself to slightly lower than 10Mbps... Any explanation would be better than anything I could think of right now... But 10Meg FTW :) Nothing better than seeing your downloads go into the MegaByte speeds haha :)

ADSL2+ (G.Dmt.BisPlus) continually checks the line SNR ratio, and adjusts the download speed to minimise packet loss. (More specifically it disables certain frequencies on which noise is prevalent). AFAIK that's normal behaviour, since noise levels will vary during the day.

Standard ADSL (G.Dmt) uses the same set of frequencies all day long (until you reboot). when noise levels rise you get more CRC errors, which the modem has to retransmit. This reduces effective throughput, even if the 'nominal' rate is still 4Mbps.

ADSL2+ is superior in this respect, so don't complain!

Thanks for the explanation, That makes so much sense now. Haha I wasn't complaining, I was just curious as to what was going on and even a little worried that telkom would drop my profile to a lower speed because of it.

what do you mean - normal downloads?
 
I'm currently sitting at 5.5 meg, but I'll reset my router tomorrow and double check.
 
I still don't understand the situation. The checker website says my exchange does not support the 10mb upgrade... But I was under the assumption that Sea Point exchange was one of the original exchanges to have the trial 8mb/12mb speeds? 021434xxxx
 
Heya All ~

We have been having intermittent connection issues on one of our work ADSL lines (we have a couple on premises) and finally got a Telkom technician out last week. He was very knowledgeable and friendly, and said if we moved exchanges it would give us good speed increases and reliability.

Yes, well - this specific line is BLISTERING fast now, downloading large files in minutes. Upload speeds remained the same, but wow this router is SMOKING! Running for about 1 week very stable on excellent speeds, not sure how long it will last, or is it's just a fluke? Check speedtest.net - http://www.speedtest.net/result/944958019.png
 
@ Colin62, i believe they just transfer their port that is assigned on their current exchange to another exchange. Though am open to correction.

Thats very fast speeds there LotusHead, you running Bonded ADSL or something similar?

Surprisingly enough, your upload should at least see upto 1MB +-:confused:

I'm quite surprised, my 4mbps service was all wobbly now that I'm on 6mbps it's perfectly stable.

Couple weeks ago, plugged my number into the 10Mbps line checker Telkom thingie and was pleasantly surprised to get a green message for the first time. :)

Called them, asked them to upgrade the line, they did, no mess, no fuss.

Modem reports:
  • Downstream Rate: 10014 kbps
  • Upstream Rate: 947 kbps

Downloads max out around just over 1000KB/s, and usually hover at 950KB/s. Uploads max out around 100KB/s.

Lucky bastard if only it were that simple for most of us to get im having huge doubts about 10mb ever coming to my area:cry:
 
my 10mb line has been very unstable lately. been getting speeds of 150kbps-290kbps as of last week. i found these statistics on my router but i have no clue what they mean. does anyone know what the following means? im using a mega 200vwr router
