Highly-skilled people leave SA

There was this dude that started working with me straight out of uni. He made the news because he had the best marks for computer science ever achieved. Then this server admin pitches up and stares over my shoulder. I as ask him wtf, and he says he is watching how I am breaking the database. He said it must be me, because its only me and the new dude with access to the db. The admin could not find how I am breaking the db, turned out the new super computer science dude authored an endless loop on the db.

and where is this dude now? still in SA or long ago left for MIT or the NSA?

More specifically, Mobile development. Finding a good iOS developer in this country is super difficult. I resigned from my current company and have a 60 day notice - which ends next week and we have not been able to find a single candidate that meets the right criteria. It's gotten so bad that my last company even set up a graduates program to help young people out of uni to build skills they need.

Thanks. Not iOS but I knew of one full stack developer who used to work for JSE and he was getting paid about 1.2Mil 7 years ago and he was quite open about his remuneration (bragging really but rightfully so) but he said the deadlines were so tight and they expected so much from him that he burned out after 2 years.
 
I just want an entry level position in Netherlands for an English speaker :/

Seems a ton of jobs want Dutch & English
 
Had meeting this morning and as I joined guys were discussing where ex developers are living now and who would live where.
It seems it is on everybody's mind..

I want to get out here ASAP and learn while over there.

My brother got a job offer over there that didn't require Dutch, but it was highly recommended. He took his family and he's doing lessons there

Yeah that I can believe. I don't have that experience in the ten years that I have done iOS development. I'm paid a little more than 1.2bar and have a very relaxed work / life balance - most days I finish at 15:30 and also WFH full time.

But that isn't the norm for a lot of people in IT and burnout is very real - I did suffer it a few years ago but that was my own making and not pressure from a company.

The company I am joining in two weeks time is paying me a little more than that and it is a very critical role for them. I hear the environment is great and they have HQ in London - going to go there in July to meet them in person.

They have general skills and to be honest in my experience not much else when it comes to programming. However iOS development is very specific type of programming and requires a dedicated course / programme. They don't teach it at uni (As far as I know)

We did lessons online with a teacher before coming over. Don't wait untill you get here to start. The move and settling in is already overwhelming.

You are SO busy getting your life organized and working, that doing lessons at night is exhausting.

(I have no intention of going there and don't know Afrikaans) Just curious.

Well, I studied Afrikaans (not a fluent speaker) but I have interacted with Dutch and Suriname Dutch speakers and can understand a bit of what they say, maybe 20-30%?

I'd hazard a guess you would get to fluent in a year or so with study but most Dutch are very fluent in English.

How's your Afrikaans? If you're Afrikaans you should be 80%+ on understanding and reading dutch, the speaking part a bit harder.
