Have just received two calls within the last hour from an unknown number. When I answer the call an automated American female voice says "Hold please, I have a call for this number" .... "Attempting to connect".... it repeats this a few times, then says "I'm sorry, I was unable to connect you, I will try again later"

Does anyone know what this is.... or who it is??? Worried that it might be some sort of scam, called Vodacom but they have no idea what it is. :cry:

Debt collectors using an automated queue system to patch you through to the next available operator. I know, you're thinking you've paid all your debts. But you haven't. You forgot to pay your Health & Racquet membership for the last 8 years and now Virgin wants their money. Yes, I know you cancelled your membership but they don't.

I kid you not - expect the call... It happened to Mrs Orgy. First these american "please hold" things then the debt collector. Then me, some language and now a daily affair. It's called Racqueteering...

Ok, I get it.... only one problem, I've never had a Health and Raquet membership. If it is a debt collector....how would I find out who thinks I owe them money??? According to my records I don't owe anyone?!?!?!

Planet Fitness? Also, they could have the wrong number. But I guarantee its a bank...

I think it's incredibly rude.... regardless of who it is. What sense does it make, to call someone and waste their time, for no reason at all. Can't wait for the Consumer Protection Act to come into effect!

When answering a call from an unknown phone number, never speak first.
If an automated system tells you to hold, put the phone down immediately.
If you speak first, then the call is registered as "picked up" or connected.
If you do not speak, then there is no way to know if the call was actually connected, and nobody can hold it against you if you drop the call, every time. In addition, the system will be programmed to only try a maximum of about 3 times before giving up forever on that communication medium if the call is never "connected".
The 3 times may be spread over 2 days.

Less = More.

Got one of these the other day - but I wasn't in, so my machine spoke to their machine for a bit, and then hung up, leaving me with a very peculiar message, until I read this thread! :)
