Think I bought it at builders - there was one already, but it had blown - so just took the old one in and this is what they gave me. (about 5 years ago)
 
Has anyone seen stock of the Sonoff waterproof case anywhere? Need one quite urgently.

Can I start off with Sonoff's and eWeLink just because I'm lazy, want to play with my wife's iPhone and then later perhaps flash them and go the custom route?

You definitely can. The wiring is normally the hard part and is the same with different firmwares.

Yeah - that's a definite possibility and actually the best approach IMO.

EweLink is cloud based though - if security is a concern. Works really well though.
If you want an isolated approach then CFW and an Open-Source Automation software like OpenHAB might be the best option. There are still way's to securely open it up so you can access it all from outside of your network on an internet connected mobile device

I currently have about 20 devices on sonoff switches, stock firmware and using eWelink. Most are setup on schedules, so then I don't need the app. I've been thinking of flashing it all and using something like Openhab, but the app works fine for now. It's also setup with Google Assistant on my phone, so don't even have to use the app at all.

That being said, I find Domoticz the easiest with the least complexity around fully understanding MQTT and the commands. And it's fully capable too.

That would just frustrate me. I found the app to be a pain in the arse. I also wanted everything integrated, I didn't want one app for Sonoff, one app for Xiaomi, one app for Kodi, one app for Chromecast, etc.

I don't have any issues with the app. It lets me switch on or off a device, or setup schedules to do so. I'll have the exact same functionality if I'm doing it in Openhab or Home Assistant.

The only other apps I can maybe integrate is my cameras app and doorbell app, but I don't mind having a different apps for that. And for Kodi I prefer using the remote instead of an App.

Maybe once I have OpenSprinkler up and running, I'll look into custom firmware again...

On which platform did you use the app e.g iOS or Android?
What do you use now that does-it-all-one-Mum?

I want to go with Alexa to control lights with voice...at least for phase one. Can add other "skills" as connect more devices.

Android - currently using Home Assistant
