HOME NETWORK PROBLEM
OS : Win Xp SP 2 all have administrator rights.
( Only laptop has Blank password log-on)

Router : Mever ADSL Wireless + router
LAN : 1 Laptop & 2 desktops ( all running Win XP SP2 ) connected to router.

I cannot view my Desktop PC’s on the network. Note: the laptop is available in the work group through out.

I tried googling this for an entire day, no solution in sight...it can't be rocket science.

I can view my laptop on the network & access the files on the laptop from both Desktop PCs.

Again, both Desktops do not appear on the network. ( can not be seen in work group computers)
All PCs can ping each other.
Workgroup name is same throughout.
Uninstalled Kaspersky Internet security.
Windows Firewall Disabled. ( no other additional firewalls )
File printer & sharing enabled.
Obtain IP Address automatically
Obtain DNS automatically

Your help will most defiantly be appreciated & lesson my headache.

Something to do with network domain/group maybe, both must be on the same group IIRC.

Another way is run the network setup again and create a disk to run on the other PC, I never had to do that tho.

Sounds interesting. Do you have any drives or folders shared on the desktops. If not try sharing a folder or two, allowing everyone full permissions to the share, and then see what happens.

Thanks for feedback guys,
Just to recap....

a few folders are shared
Guest account is enabled
I have run teh network setup wizard a gagillion times :)

Pengiun , When u are mentioning " group IIRC." u do mean the work group right.

After last night, i'm begenning to think it might have to do wit my login's.
Note:
Both Desktop PC's have no login, they merely start.
The laptop ( the only one visible on the network has a blank password login.

Spark any ideas...?

Thanks guys
After last night I'm thinking

if you try open run and \\ipaddress to the desktops?

If you can ping all the PC's then try run the network setup wizard on all the PC's. Else try fiddle with the registry...

that should work. I have had that problem before and ended up going winkey+r and then typing \\ipaddress and then map network the drives it makes life so much easier

Had a similar problem last week, turned out to be a faulty network switch. Connect the two machines directly with a cross-over cable - think you'll need to assign fixed ip's on the same sub-net. Another source of trouble may be a faulty network cable, re-plug all network cables and make sure they are properly seated. Lastly, check the network cards.

Thanks guys,

Feedback...:

Tau1z : I ran \\ipaddress on my desktop & the shared files of my desktop come up...( yay )
IRG: I dunno how to fiddle with my registry

Labratza : as for \\ipaddress...how do I map my network Drive, I am pretty sure that this could work...

Though....if my desktop is not showing on the network group, How am i going to access
" map network Drive "

I also tried " add network place " did not work...

Vero LAnd : I put a password on my laptop.....No difference....

SO teh problem is...: there is something blocking the desktop to appear on teh network.

Not the fire walls...what else can it be....?

"Map network Drive..." if I can access this, that would great

ahh...any other things to try out ? Netbio, Permissions, regedit ? ? ?

Thanks guys

DearHeart ,

I can ping the other computers with no errors, does this indicate that the hardware is correct ?

I can access teh Laptop files from my desktop, but can;t access the desktop files from teh laptop.
Reason : my Desktop is not showing on teh network.

mmm...more pondering...

NOTE: This headache has officially reached Migrane status....
Thank you Microsoft

hi,

have u tried using static ip adress? making sure the subnet on all the computers are the same. and set the default gateway to ur router ip.

I had same problem but while running vista home. this solved my problem. good luck. ;)

BOND : I tried using the static IP.....no difference, still able to only see the laptop on the network.

Thanks though

I've seen this several times, causes were faulty network cards, routers and cables - causes intermittent and puzzling results. You have to replace each one of these components to eliminate the problem. I've seen this again just two weeks ago. PC, printer and lappy connected via router. Can ping everything from both, no show on workgroup, can't search for \\pcname either. After I replaced the router no more problems.

Kaspersky is useless! People NEVER buy kspersky. I can't access even my router. I get a error! "The page you are trying to access might be harmfull to your computer, access to the site has been blocked!"

Kaspersky epic fail!

I will try this tonight dearheart, just gonna strap one it directly via cross over cable...
I;ll let u know...

epic lol, i swear by Kaspersky, its keeps my system, " good n clean n fresh..."

Thanks, I attempt Mapping the drive,

\\server\name

I recieve an error That " THE NETWORK PATH CANNOT BE FOUND/"

Frustration level has now been upgraded from mere migrane to binine tumor...
Thank you Microsoft.
