HOME NETWORK PROBLEM ( its not rocket science )

Had a similar problem last week, turned out to be a faulty network switch. Connect the two machines directly with a cross-over cable - think you'll need to assign fixed ip's on the same sub-net. Another source of trouble may be a faulty network cable, re-plug all network cables and make sure they are properly seated. Lastly, check the network cards.

He can access using ip with \\ip so faulty cards are not likely. Layer 3 is working which means its higher up

Thanks guys,

Feedback...:

Tau1z : I ran \\ipaddress on my desktop & the shared files of my desktop come up...( yay )
IRG: I dunno how to fiddle with my registry

Labratza : as for \\ipaddress...how do I map my network Drive, I am pretty sure that this could work...

Though....if my desktop is not showing on the network group, How am i going to access
" map network Drive "

I also tried " add network place " did not work...

Vero LAnd : I put a password on my laptop.....No difference....

SO teh problem is...: there is something blocking the desktop to appear on teh network.

Not the fire walls...what else can it be....?

"Map network Drive..." if I can access this, that would great

ahh...any other things to try out ? Netbio, Permissions, regedit ? ? ?

Thanks guys

I've seen this several times, causes were faulty network cards, routers and cables - causes intermittent and puzzling results. You have to replace each one of these components to eliminate the problem. I've seen this again just two weeks ago. PC, printer and lappy connected via router. Can ping everything from both, no show on workgroup, can't search for \\pcname either. After I replaced the router no more problems.

Again, see his access..

Thanks, I attempt Mapping the drive,

\\server\name

I recieve an error That " THE NETWORK PATH CANNOT BE FOUND/"

Frustration level has now been upgraded from mere migrane to binine tumor...
Thank you Microsoft.

I am wondering if u have a DNS issue then? try ping the machine using machine name and see if it resolves.

Thank you Microsoft.

As you don't have a local DNS server, you can't use machine names unless you put a host file on each machine. So to map the drive use

\\ip\shared folder OR use c$ instead of shared folder, also choose the option to log in as a different user for mapping, now use the Machine NAME not ip address with the username and password as follows: machine name\user name

Definately a DNS problem.
It is possible to set up DNS on a XP SP2 PC with basic DHCP if you use Internet Connection Sharing. However I have never tried this on a router.

Do an ipconfig /all in command promt. HAve a look at all the network settings displayed.
Do you have a DNS IP? Unlikely...

You can also do a ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns this will most definately give you an error of no DNS server found or something like that.

The easyes way to do it is like bekdik said. Map it with a different username and password. Although if the guest account is enabled and the sharing is set up. It is supposed to work without a username or password.

Again, thanks for the Time & effort...its keeping me curious....

Check it out...

Changed the Hardware, not the hardware, ever-things the same.

Tau1z : Bekdik
I have tryed mapping a drive & logging in as a different user ( \ip\shared folder ) to no avail.
I manage to map the Folder, though it is only accessible from the desktop & can not be accessed by my laptop. ( can see it in my computer, can not see it in the workgroup)

As for the DNS problem...
It seems that I do have a DNS IP ..here is teh info on the ( its the smae as my router ip ?)

Ipconfig/all - IIpconfig/Flushdns - ipconfig/registerdns

www.creativewebsites.co.za/temp.html

So now I'm stumped on what to try out next.

Had a similar problem in Win7, this was supposed to be for Vista, but worked for me, use your regedit ...

MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
everyoneincludesanonymous and change the 0 value to a 1
NoLmHash and change the 1 value to a 0

MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManSe rver\Parameters\NullSessionShares
restrictnullsessaccess and change the 1 value to a 0

PS always export / backup registry before changing anything...

Alternatively, look at this workaround for a solution ... http://www.mvixusa.com/support/know...essional+for+Mvix+MX-760HD+and+MX-780HD?.html

Thanks,

so managed to change the

" MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
everyoneincludesanonymous and change the 0 value to a 1
NoLmHash and change the 1 value to a 0 "

Though I can not find the second reg file , all I can find is here :
www.creativewebsites.co.za/temp2.html

Thanks for the help, its been an all hours of the day tweak.... hopefully I get it soon.

I followed the link & performed the actions as they said....still the same...

Can ping everyone, can see laptop, can't see self...

Frustration Level : Benine Tumor evolved to throbbing tumor....( surgery likely)

Thanks for the help...

Any more avenues I can follow...

If you could start from scratch, found it difficult to follow this threads troubleshooting.
on each machine:

ping localhost ( will give 127.0.0.1 info etc )
ping <machine name> ( you'll pick this up from the localhost ping )

If all goes well there, check your TCP/IP > Advanced > DNS
specifically > register this connections address in DNS
also on the WINS tab make sure all the machines are set the same.

Those registries looks to be something to do with the authentication of sharing folders on your PC. This is not the issue. It is definately a DNS issue, we just need to find out where the problem is. At this moment it seems to me that it is pointing to the Router.

Ok here is what I would recomend to try next. Thing is we can see the laptop? So somehow the DNS is being received for the laptop and the other PC's can see the laptop.

So I would recommend ping the laptop on its name. See if it resolves the name to an IP address? Looking at the details you initialy provided. I am having a feeling it might work...

Now. Ping the other PC's by its name. Do you get an IP address? Dont think it will resolve?

Ok another new command for you for the future coming up. now ping -a IP of laptop. It should resolve it into a name assuming the first laptop name ping resolved and IP?
Now do the same for the other PC's. Should not resolve a name but the ping should go through after a while.

Ok now I would reccomend having a look at doing an IPconfig /all on all the PC's and the laptop. Compare the information to see if the DNS information is correct for all the deviced.

Also confirm that all the devices is in the same subnet?

Maybe do a ipconfig /release and then a ipconfig /renew and for safety a ipconfig /registerdns(should not be necasary with the renew allready run)
Do that on all the PC's. Once done do the following on all 3 PC's ipconfig /dnsflush

What happens is when you register dns your PC send its name and its mac with its assigned IP to the DNS server which it receives from the router.
When you do a dns flush your PC will whipe the current DNS and receive the new DNS information from the router.

Test those couple of things. See if it works and if not try to provide me with the IPs you see with the ipconfig all command with each step

Morning guys, back to the throbbing tumor

Drake2007 :
Ping Local host & machine name : A ok, no packets lost.
TCP/IP ADvance DNS - DNS server address EMPTY
Wins address - EMPTY

Do I need to add the IP's to teh DNS & WINS ?

EMPTY SHADOW :

"YES we can" see the laptop on the network.
" YEs " pinging teh name of the laptop works all packets sent

" YEs " I can ping the PC by the name , works all packets sent

ping -a IP address works on all

IP config subnet all the same.

NOTE: on teh laptop theres additional info on "Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interfaces"

did ipconfig/release / renew / flush

Still the same situation.

here is the IP config/all fo rthe desktop - www.creativewebsites.co.za/temp3.html
IPconfigall/ for laptop www.creativewebsites.co.za/temp4.html

There should be an IP for DNS in there, try adding it manually ( should be your routers IP). WINS must be empty, check the settings under that to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP

Sounds like the router isn't handing out all the information for name resolution for some reason.
Could mean there is an issue with DHCP server on your network, make sure you don't have ICS running on your PC/s Laptop.

Thanks Drake2007,

I tried connecting the laptop m& my desktop straight to each other...same situation, so I doubt its the router involvement.

While tehy are connected straight to each other, there is a limited or connectivity msg on the network, thpough i can still access the laptop files from my desktop.

I will try adding the DNS IP when I get back this afternoon. also I enabled &Netbios earlier to no avail, I will attempt it again.

as for ICS, i've uninstalled all teh iCS ( kaspersky )

If there is no solution In sight, should I merely format & re-install ( last resort GOSH)
ouch, i know...

Frustration level : ( Surgery for tumor iminant)

by ICS I mean Internet Connection Sharing,

Limited connectivity - did you set IP's to static when testing?

Sounds very virussy to me so maybe a re-install is on the cards.

yes, it was static....still, exactly the same situation....

Thanks so much for your guys assistance, It really is appreciated...

Options moving forward....

- Full Format New install
- Re-install Windows...

Re-install sounds more appetising... ( coz of teh time)

what do u recommend...

again, Thanks

Frustration Level : ( surgery has evolved to brain translplant...awaiting results)

Do not feel alone. Just connected another PC to router. Win7/XP. Tadaa! no see no network.

LOL....thanks again for the assistance....DAM u Microsoft !

They can send signals beyond our solar system right back to us....

but I can't connect to computers that are 10 m apart...

I will carry on browsing for the remainder of the day to try & connect...
If i dont come right...the Format & re-installl will have to take place...OMG, thats is a time consuming excersize....

Thanks, Have great days !
