HOME NETWORK PROBLEM ( its not rocket science )

I dont completely understand why ICS is set up if all the PC's connects to the Router?
Is this simply to get a local DHCP and DNS functionality?

Here you say you have no DNS...

But here you say you have DNS...

You use ICS on a PC? And you use a router. ICS is intended for for connecting internet on modems with no router. The router links the internet and probable gets the internet a different DNS IP and thats why the internet is working through the router.

It seems that you are doing something wrong or I just dont understand anymore.

Limited connectivity between the laptop and desktop with the crossover cable tells me there's something up with the hardware, either a NIC is blown, cable is damaged, or a driver issue.

(Note: Virii do inject themselves into drivers)

mmm....so chances are virus is on the Desktop right ?
coz teh Laptop is working cool as candy...

i dunno whats worse, the clap, the herp or CPU Virus's

If one is infected then chances are high it's on all three of them and a re-install with the machine on the network will just be reinfected from one of the other machines so lock it down i.e. Service Pack and AntiVirus first before connecting it.

How are you with Linux? as in a Live CD just to check it's not hardware?

Just because he got a limited connectivety does not mean it is the cable or even a virus.

Remember he still needs some sort of DHCP server to assign the IP address. IF no IP is obtained it will show limited or no connectivety. If you configure a static IP on that PC even in a different subnet it will show connected even though it wont be able to communicate. So I doubt that it is the cable.

When testing with the crossover, did you assign static IP's on both?

Please read my previous post. HAve a look at those two links I posted inside my message. They reference to two of your posts in the Thread.
At one post you say you get the DNS IP as the routers IP. At the other post you say you do not have any DNS settings.

Why not connect everything use your default configurations u had. Do the ipconfig /all command on each device and right click and mark everything that comes up. Right click on it(this should copy it, otherwise try using ctrl+c) and paste each devices content in a seperate code box on the forum.

Remember to say which PC is which and again just say how it is configured. Static IP or DHCP. Is ICS used?

Just remember to remove any Internet IP addresses from your post and replacing them with *.*.*.*

Also, please try to include me a small network diagram. How everything is connected. Even if it is just a MS Paint created picture.

Nishano , just from looking at the pictures and all the posts in this thread please follow this step by step and you will be up and running in no time.

I see a few errors you need to sort out and you will be on your way..
NB.
1. When using a Router in conjuction with ICS, you need to change the Routers IP
-An example: http://192.168.1.254 is a default router IP, change whatever it is to 192.168.0.254
2. Incorrect DNS and Gateway entries.
Follow the steps below to sort.

1. Host IP 192.168.0.1 (PC That has the dialup connection XP or Vista)
2. Workstations (your networked PC's) IP 192.168.0.2 , IP 192.168.0.3 etc..
3. Router IP change from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.0.254 (change in Router Settings Homepage)
4. Enable ICS on the Host Machine, run the wizard, run the network wizard for the rest of your computers on your LAN to use another Gateway, use the same workgroup/domain.

5. Host Network Connection Settings TCP/IP Properties:
5.1 IP: 192.168.0.1
5.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
5.3 Default Gateway: Blank
5.4 Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222
5.5 Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.220

6. Workstation/s Network Connection Settings TCP/IP Properties:
6.1 IP: 192.168.0.2
6.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
6.3 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
6.4 Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222
6.5 Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.220

Repeat the above Workstation steps for other computers on your LAN that you wish to share ICS but obviously change the IP 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4 etc..

ICS through the router that way and there is no hassle. Remember to use OpenDNS as the Primary and Alternate DNS's in order to browse.

Strange, my understanding is that the OP connected the laptop and desktop directly with a crossover cable using static IPs and that gave him limited connectivity.

Yes I did assign static IP to both machines via the crossover cable...

I did manage to put teh DNS setting after told its teh same as teh router
( seen in IPconfig)

I stayed up last night Formatting & re-installing all my software... ( tedious expedition )
I'm glad to say that the Network is running....yes, on start I seen my desktop on the workgroup....I was euphoric, Tears started rolling down my face....it was epic....

So far....
MY laptop & desktop are A - OK on the network.
Now for my second desktop....I will attemp teh steps Kasbah has set out in order to gain full access to my network ( 300 war cry: whhooa )

If its another fail on my part...is there any way I can merely install the Network componants form teh XP disk ?

Coz i'm thinking thats all I actually need form teh install....

Guys, thanks so much for the help...

I think I should be on my way to networking heaven by the end of the day.

:) I'll recap on the success rate.

Frustration level : ( Surgery on throbbing tumor , successful, awaiting sticths to heal )

no solution for the additional desktop pc, Going to try & re-install the network componants....should be in networking heaven , by the end of the day...

Thanks guys, irrespective, theres all a solution....

Running A OK....In networking heaven, Re-install Windows seemed to have worked
