Home Network Setup - Please Help

You can't really do VLAN's, unless you have an expensive switch that supports it of course, which pretty much defies the point of buying a cheap server.

No problem.

He's got a gigabit switch, dunno which one or what features it supports. Even if he had an expensive switch he would still need a server to perform the functions he wants.

In case you weren't aware, Linux supports VLANs, Bridging, Bonding, and most every feature you would find on a switch. This means that if you have a ClearOS server with a lot of NICs you can make it be your 'switch' and your server.

We set up ClearOS to do this all the time for businesses. In 6.0, there will be greater GUI support for this. Most of the work has already been done in the backend API for this support.

I was aware that Linux supports VLAN's. The issue is that you require a switch that supports VLAN's, otherwise it's pretty worthless.

Got ClearOS- now what?

Hi There,

I have now installed ClearOS but dont know how to limit individual people's bandwidth or how to set up multiple connections over one ADSL line..

My setup is a follows:
DSL ROUTER(Bridged) >> COS NIC 1 - 100Mbps (External PPPoE) >> COS NIC 2 1000Mbps (STATIC - 192.168.1.3)>> D-Link Gigabit switch>> PC's.

DHCP is enabled on NIC 2 and i can connect to the internet as well as the COS Web Interface from my other PC's. Cahcing web proxy also works like a charm

What more do I have to set up to enable individual users to use their own ISPs (via PPPoE) and at the moment i can only limit the ppp0 inteface's upload and download speeds. What I want is to limit the IP's individually and/or to give priority to ports.

Thanks
Niel
