Horsemeat scandal escalates

Mechanical separation is far worse, but it wont make funny pieces like Abzo discovered.
 
I hate to affirm stereotypes but it was a meal I bought at a Chinese takeaway.

It probably was chicken though.
 
Don't really care what meat I eat as long as if I'm buying a meat it actually is that meat.

Lol. Yep, I totally agree. For some reason though horse lasagne sounds more like lasagne for horses. Maybe call it something like mixed meat or mystery meat lasagne and then state what percentage is what meat.

Cattle and pigs we eat are reared for the food industry and their food and health are monitored and implemented accordingly. In some countries, horse is also.

I eat horse salami from Finland most days for example, because it is popular over there and I'm working with a lot of these guys who bring it with them to our site. There's always a couple of big packets in the fridge and we all munch away throughout the day. Lovely stuff.

But the problem with eating horse meat that is passed of as beef, is where has the horse meat come from? Are you eating old Neddy the cart horse that had a dodgy stomach and the vet gave him some shots for it for years before his owner sold him to the knackers yard for glue? Or do you think the horses you have not got a problem eating are free range, corn fed and organic?

It has very little to do with horse meat, its the abject faulure of the food standards agency and the meat trades self regulation. Were the horses bred for consumption, or are they ex-racehorses that have past its sell-by date. This is vastly different as the animal painkiller Bute is very bad for humans, and is banned from entering the food chain in some countries.

Phenylbutazone, often referred to as bute,[1] is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for the short-term treatment of pain and fever in animals.

In the United States and United Kingdom, it is no longer approved for human use, as it can cause severe adverse effects such as suppression of white blood cell production and aplastic anemia.

The chemical found in the Findus lasagnes is known as ‘bute’, or Phenylbutazone, and is an anti-inflammatory used by vets mainly to treat pain and fever in horses.

In the mid-20 century it was also used in human medicine as a treatment for gout and arthritis, but was banned – in food and medicine intended for humans – after it was linked to aplastic anaemia (a blood condition that inhibits cell production bone marrow) and the suppression of white blood cell production. Around one in 30,000 recipients of the drug suffered a serious side effect.

Humans are disgusting? Because they like to eat horse meat or because sometimes they're dishonest and lie about contents of their suppliers' products?
 
Neigh I say this horsemeat is great puts a spring in my step, feel like I could gallop a mile.
