"Gauteng hospitals 'on high alert'
06/10/2008 08:44 - (SA)

Antoinette Pienaar, Beeld

Johannesburg - The National Institute for Communicable Diseases is urgently doing tests to determine the origin of a highly contagious disease that has already killed three people in Gauteng.

The unknown disease probably originated in Zambia, and the Department of Health issued a press statement on Sunday warning travellers who had been to the country in the past month, to go to hospital if they were experiencing flu-like symptoms.

The first patient, a Zambian woman, was critically ill when she was admitted to the Morningside Medi-Clinic in Johannesburg on September 12.

She died two days later, but tests for several diseases, including haemorrhagic fever, were negative.

On September 27, the paramedic who had accompanied her from Zambia, was admitted to the same hospital with flu symptoms.

His condition initially improved, but deteriorated on Wednesday. The man died the next day. All the tests done on him came back with negative results.

On Sunday, a nurse who had treated the Zambian woman in hospital, died in the Sir Albert Robinson hospital on the West Rand.

Her test results were also negative.

Highly contagious

Melinda Pelser, district marketing manager of Medi-Clinic, said on Sunday she could not release the names of the patients as the disease was a notifiable one.

"All we know is that it is highly contagious.

"It is believed to be transmitted via drops of fluid, when one person coughs or sneezes or when someone encounters the bodily fluids of the infected person," she said.

"It is serious enough to be careful. We feel compelled to warn people."

The department said on Sunday it was monitoring everyone who had been in contact with the deceased, for fever and flu symptoms.

The Steve Biko (formerly the Pretoria Academic) and the Charlotte Maxeke (formerly Johannesburg General) hospitals have been placed on high alert to handle any more cases.

People who have been to Zambia during the past month and had high fever or flu-like symptoms should go to their nearest hospital for a medical examination. They may also contact Dr Chika Asomugha of the Gauteng Department of Health on 082 3301490."

Africa is full of scary viruses...

Some years ago I was hospitalised for a night at the Sandton Clinic. In the ward next door were two Rwandan pilots recovering from a military plane crash. A few days afterwards my left eye lost vision. After very extensive testing, the eye specialist eventually diagnosed it as a viral infection of the optic nerve, and asked if I'd been into central Africa. That's when we made the connection to the Rwandan pilots, but of course nothing could be proved.

If you ever find yourself in hospital with people from cental Africa, my advice to you is get out fast!

My God thats horrible. Did you recover your vision?

Ebola is probably one of the most frightening diseases out there at the moment - just imagine the effect if it got out in a densely populated area like Gauteng.

Obviously the hospitals aren't alert enough ...

Mediclinic should quarantine all their staff and contacts. Hope they're contacting all the patients who were there during that time period.

I hope the first patient was kept in isolation but judging by the fact that a cleaner is now dead, I am skeptical.

Are our Health Dept and Private authorities capable of handling this?

In the past they were. I hope they still are.

If this spills out into the public hospitals then in my opinion, not a chance.

I had the shocking experience of visiting Helen Joseph (the old JG Strydom) recently and it's nothing short of disgusting. How will they be able to effectively set up a quarantine when there's blood-stained bandages and other contaminated medical garbage in the dustbins at the entrance to the emergency rooms?

It's scary!

What do you mean if it spills out in public hospitals.

2 MediClinic employees have died. A woman with an unknown serious febrile illness was brought in and not kept in isolation. So are a private hospital has let us down.

You tell me. Late last year one of our employees had a fight at home and ended up at a government hospital. Far East Rand if I remember correctly. The experience of going there shocked me. the ER had old blood stains on the walls and floors, the hospital was busy falling apart. I think I still have some of the pics I took that day - disgusting.

I think the sooner we resign to the fact that we live in a banana republic, the easier it will be to understand whatever happens in the future. Sad but true.

Mmmm... strange unidentifiable virus... killing people... nobody knows what it is...!! Have any of them become re-animated yet? If they do turn into Zombies I hope that they become "Sean of the Dead" type zombies rather then Rez Evil or 28 days Later type zombies!!!

Yes that is correct, but if it spreads and the general public are affected, it will end up in public hospitals. Now if a private hospital has been unable to stop this, do you really think the public system has the skill and capacity to control an infective outbreak?

I doubt it.
