Hosting a Woocommerce site

So I am busy playing around with WooCommerce for the first and got a theme set up and ready to go. One thing I have noticed is that the site speed is not very up to scratch.

I've optimized, minified and done all the necessary caching, so that picked up our pagespeed analytics all but 10%.

I'm currently hosting on Afrihost with shared hosting, but I think I need to get a dedicated server once the site gets up and running (and hopefully busy after all our upcoming social media campaigns).

The real question:
Where would be the most suitable place to host the site? Taking into account value for money, good service and compatible/better suited with WP.

I see Afrihost has a R950 p/m on dedicated hosting. Is this good enough, or are there providers out there which are better suited to hosting a Wordpress site?

Thanks!:D

I use godaddy. Its R140 a month for basically unlimited everything. Afrihost servers are so bad and so out dated. i have had some many problems with them and wordpress updates. I have 20 sites on godaddy now and no problems. Their tech support is very cool.

also they offer ssl certificates included which you might need one day.

Hope that helps.

This helps my life. With all your 20 sites, do you notice a massive improvement in speed compared to Afrihost? I'll be looking at their packages today

Wow, don't you think a dedicated server is overkill for a Woocom site? I host a couple of basic sites where I used woocom with Web Crew and the sites each get a fair bit of traffic. No speed issues whatsoever - on shared hosting! I usually rock 80+ on pagespeed insights. Don't get why you'd want more than that unless you have some serious traffic....

Ya defiantly faster. These are some plugin's you can use to speed your site up. Caching Plugin - W3 Total Cache. Compress Images - WP Smush.it . Optimize your database - WP-Optimize. Also a good trick is Disable hotlinking and leeching of your content. Also if you use googles site speed test they tell you what might be slowing your site down. https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/

I also thought initially that it would be sufficient. However my pagespeed is in the high 50's, and working on the wp dashboard is painful. Still considering options until I get the site the way I want it.

I've got all these installed already, next step is some proper hosting and I should be ready to rock and roll. Thanks for the help - will keep you updated

I host my website on Hetzner, after trying a few different hosts. I've found Hetzner gives the best service, even if they are a little bit more expensive than some other hosts. You can take a look at my signature to see an example of my site. I'm currently on the shared hosting option and the website is running fine.

Just would like to revive this thread for two reasons:

1. mshini.com - excellent service received from them. My site is 10x faster and their support is excellent. If anyone is looking for managed wordpress hosting thats locally hosted, these are your go to guys.

2. Dammit - MDS collivery were CRAZY with their shipping prices.
e-commerece store owners - who do you use for shipping thats reasonable. I'm really not too phased about same day delivery, but I would like reasonable pricing as I would like to charge a flat rate for shipping.

I guess what I'm asking is how does OneDayOnly charge a R59 flat rate for delivery anywhere in the country?

MDS has reasonable next day pricing structures, the more you ship the better the pricing tier pending on the agreements in place. We only do next day, and charge the customer as quoted by the courier service.

We use Fedex, MDS and Fastway. There are many reasonable couriers, large and small.

Try the free hosting and free domain name at Axxess. Might just work for you.

The costs from MDS have got out of hand. From Illovo to Haartebeesport they wanted R240 for an envelope next day plus change the time to a 1 week delivery. Shipped to Bryanston instead for R80. Then an envelope to Illovo Jhb to Bloemfontien, next day, they wanted R140, we used Aramex at R100 from the caltex garage.

MDS service is great but customers don't want to pay R240 to Haarties. We are going to try Courier Guy and see how they go. Fastway depends on the driver in your area and he is terrible in our area.

I've seen the same pricing structure from MDS. Cool man, please let me know if you manage to find a good solution to this. I'm also currently looking at Mr Delivery Couriers, their rates dont seem too bad

What made you decide you need a dedicated box?
Do you have some stats you can provide so we can look at it as I think that would be overkill and you can save money with something else like a solid VPS.

I personally will get a VPS from domains, it's SSD and permanent up-time and the support is second to none.

Uptime see this thread -> POST: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/842012-Afrihost-down?p=18326964&viewfull=1#post18326964

I'm hosting my Woo Commerce site with domains.co.za. It loads pretty fast. Also check how many scripts and stuff your theme is pulling in.
