How auto gearboxes went from zero to hero

Well now we are talking prehistoric cars.

There is a great many other things they didn’t do either.

I think any automatics that have a diagonal gated system don’t need the buttons. The straight up down gates have the buttons to prevent you klapping reverse into first with clutches engaged.
Not really prehistoric. As I said the super modern nannying ones can be different. You get the features you pay for so this is just more reason not to go with an expensive car then I can start it how I want, not have lights that are on or off when I don't want them to be and not have it waste wiper blades when a cloud just decides to fart.

R200 wiper blades is the last thing I worry about with regards to wastefulness.

And the nanny is generally for safer which isn’t a bad thing. And most of them you can switch off if you want to be a dead super hero.

Besides you can switch the rain sensors off too. It is however very useful in proper rain.

I’m one who hates wipers anyway and keep them off as long as possible and that’s why I use C-Thru.

Well I can confirm, at least so far as an old VW Golf 5 goes that even though the manual says you must and the icon shows on the dashboard that it does in fact start with no medal input.

Same applies for N.

Just out of interest you cannot remove the key without putting it in P.

You also cannot start it in D. Even with your foot on the brake.

The icon is for shifting out of park, not for starting. You don't need the brake on the golf 5 to start.

No stepping on brake after inserting key to be able to turn the key to "prestart" position (or whatever it is called)?

Most people probably start right away, so one motion.

Nope can go from key out to ignition without touching it.

But just shows you how the habits become automatic.

With my mothers previous Polo Vivo and with the Ecosport you have to step on the brake to be able to initially turn the key. So automatics, even from the same provider, obviously doesn't all work the same.

Kid is just about to sleep so can’t test it now, but manual says you need to have it in P or N and foot on the brake to start it.

Could just be German litigation precaution but almost sure I need to put foot on brake to have it start and could have sworn the screen says it too but didn’t pop up now.

Will test / confirm tomorrow.

Same here, foot on brakes, in N or P to start.

I always thought all autos needed foot on.brake to start. My car refuses to start unless you have you foot on the brake pedal. Have always started autos like that.

Yeah I wonder how much of this is just our habits and how much is genuinely a refusal.

But seems it differs from one car to another even from the same brands.

I know for sure that some cars I’ve driven definitely didn’t start without foot on brakes and was certain mine was the same but apparently not.

It is a bit odd. I drive a vw as well, and it won't start without your foot on the brake, so with me it's force of habit now. Whenever I get into an auto I start it like that if I don't need to, or don't know I don't need to.

Yeah I also do it automatically.

But come to think of it I recall actually many a time starting it to let the air con run so long and cool the car so long after it’s been in the sun for a few hours.

Wouldn’t be at all surprised if you find yours also starts without the foot on the pedal and you just never thought about it.

DSG 7-Speed or Tiptronic by any chance? Wonder if that’s the difference.

So. Were you wrong?

If you could read that would be as clear as day without you needing to ask to and sure.

Odd that nobody else needs special clarification...

Ag dude, you know where I am coming from. You just have an inability to say, "oops, I was wrong". It's always a clarification of what you meant, or confirming something. Try it.

Which is perfectly forthcoming from my post and everyone else could understand from it.

So where you are coming from appears as a strange stalker and harassment place.

I don’t need to try anything. But you need to get off it. Seriously, it’s just getting weird now.

For someone who usually bombs threads with "Bull ****" or whatnot, where you think they were wrong, you are unusually sensitive. Grow a pair. If you dish it out; be able to take it.
