How can Microsoft ask R1700 for Microsoft Outlook?

A friend of mine had to get his e-mail setup for a new job, and his company paid R1700 for outlook 2013.
Damn, that's one pricey e-mail reader.

How can they expect people to pay that, when similar software like Mozilla Thunderbird is free?

I don't think he's even heard of Thunderbird, and I suspect his company didn't know either.

I'm out of the times it seems though - I thought R1700 was in the range for the complete Office suite, including outlook (Yes, maybe not their "ultra" version, but at least for the student version)

A lot of users don't need Outlook, if you just need to send and receive emails then webmail, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird or one of the many other options would be fine. However, if you need Outlook you need Outlook - it has a lot of high end functionality that can't be matched by the other programs (AD integration, Exchange integration, SharePoint integration, synchronized calendars, reminders, appointments, group voting, tracking, follow-ups, etc).
