How can you drive into cyclists?

Well we have cycle lanes everywhere in Cape Town and they still ride in the road.

Well, I can give you my cousin and uncle's numbers. They both stay in Cape Town, then you can have a chat to them. They have good reason...

I was in Cape Town between Christmas and New Year and the areas (roads) where my uncles cycles I haven't seen cycle lanes.

But I must admit, some of the cyclest are idiots, but not the majority.

We do, they just don't use them. They want to be in the road with everyone else

Please point out to me these wonderful roads you speak of in Pretoria that have dedicated cycle lanes; I've lived there over 30 years and haven't come across them.

I think most of you are full of nonsense ... if you ride into a cyclist from behind, it IS your fault and it makes you a lousy driver (I mean, this was a RACE for Pete's sake, and a policeman) --- if you can ride into a cyclist from behind, it really does mean that your attention is poor enough that you will ride into ANYTHING in front of you, including other cars that e.g. stop rapidly -- you clearly misunderstand the entire "driving" thing if you think that you can drive as fast as you want and everyone must get out of your way. Cars really do not have automatic right of way over cyclists in South Africa (especially as we have no cycling lane infrastructure to speak of), you need to learn the rules of the roads you are driving on.

Cyclists should generally stay in single file, sure, but I honestly virtually never come across cyclists who get in my way while driving, they always keep out the way.

but seriously I don’t think cyclists should be on the roads.

South Africa must be the only country in the whole world where people can make such statements with a straight face and not realise how absurd that is.

It's a fair statement.

For one our motor-vehicle drivers and their vehicles are of poor quality. They are also badly behaved and policing is poor. Our cyclists are of the same ilk and are just as badly behaved and also reckless. Since most people drive to work
(ie to make a living) and most people cycle for pleasure (or exercise),
it's obvious who should have preference and in a situation as bad as ours,
banning recreational bicycles from roads would be beneficial. People who cycle
to work are a different matter, and I admit there would be difficulty in this.

Personally I find cyclists a dam pain in the a$$ when driving! I feel sorry for these people, but seriously I don’t think cyclists should be on the roads. Sometimes there is hardly enough space for a car to drive and then you have to try and dodge cyclists? Not to mention that some of them think riding half way into the road is a good idea, like the chap in the story. I mean what do you expect?

Arrogant motorists are far more dangerous than 'irritating' cyclists.

Cyclists have every right to be on the road and ride 2/3 abreast; you can OVERTAKE if you like. There is no law obliging cyclists to 'stick to the side' - in fact it's probably more dangerous as you get clipped by wing mirrors. Assertive cycling it where it's at.

There doesn't have to be a law. The road is primarily for cars. It makes good sense to not take up an entire lane just because there's no law that says you cant. And cyclists that jump stop streets are the worst.

2) Persons riding pedal cycles on a public road shall ride in single file except in the course of overtaking another pedal cycle, and two or more persons riding pedal cycles shall not overtake another vehicle at the same time.

4) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall deliberately cause such pedal cycle to swerve from side to side.

Otherwise you'll get assertively run into.

Typical cyclist attitude: Well if there isn't a law against it, I just won't use common sense either.

Nice thing about riding over a cyclist is, long after the incident, you're always left wondering whether all the crunching and grinding sounds were the bicycle or cyclist.

What attitude? - it's a perfectly legitimate way of conducting yourself on the road.

I also hate cyclists. The answer clearly is cycle lanes. I cannot ever remember seeing any in Cape Town myself...

LOL. With that attitude, you deserve to get run down, mate. Look out for me the next time you are out driving inconsiderately on your bicycle.

Holy cr*p - didn't realise the legislation was so backwards - guess I've been living in EU for too long.

@hoof,others - my bad - it's clearly not legitimate then.

still, I hope y'all run out of oil.

Don't forget to back up over him a few times, wouldn't want him posting it here afterward and giving other cyclists bad ideas
