I have tried to build my own website for my small business.

The website has been up and running for a while now and only recently have I started using the 'AWstats' function to see if people actually visit my site and are able to find it in Google search.

I read that one needs to add 'Search Tags' in order for the search engines to identify one's website as a possible to solution to a search.

How, and where do I add these tags?
Does it go somewhere on my index.html page? Or is it something that the people who host my website has to do?

I recently move my website from Hertzner (spelling) to Cybersmart, as they host it for free.

Not sure what you mean by Search Tags, mate. Are you talking about keywords being used by searchers, or something that shows up in Google??

If you are reading about keywords, then they appear in your <head> section, under the tag <meta name="Keywords"> - but be warned, Google doesn't use keywords to rank your site (other search engines may still do so) due to the abuse of this feature.

"Keyword Spamming" - wasn't that the official termed coined for that? There are even some local web development & design companies that guarantee efficient SEO by spamming each page with gazillions of keywords, not only in the <meta> tags, but "ghost" <div> tags populated with these words that are rendered with matching fore- and background colors as well! :rolleyes:

This is the first part of my index page. Where do I insert these tags?

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<html><head><title>WHAT WE DO</title>
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="MSHTML 8.00.6001.18828">
<meta content="text/html; charset=unicode" http-equiv="Content-Type">
<style>

Use these:

<meta name="keyword" content="then, list, all, keywords">
<meta name="description" content="Short description for your site">

So for instance, if I was a plumber, then my tags would be something like......

plumber - plumbing - 24 hour - free plumbing quotes - burst geyser - blocked sewer - blocked drain - etc etc etc..........

Or is this not done any longer?

Read that pdf .. It will help you lots.

Yeah, use meta tags also make sure your pages are descriptive so use page names such as "bensdiner.aspx" and not "home.aspx" or whatever... also to get some traffic to your side use ADwords its cheap ad gets you traffic quickly !

EDIT : use google web admin tools they have very good documentation on what to check for ...
