How do I use MTN SIM on a Vodafone E272?

The Vodafone E272 Modem is DEFINETLY NOT blocked

Hi Guys.
I played around with the Settings in the "Mobile Partner" Software, and guess what? I GOT IT TO WORK! :D The Vodafone E272 Modem is DEFINETLY NOT blocked, even if you buy them from a Vodashop. - my appologies V3G.:o

I Must say, MTN's Network is not as fast as I expected, as it is infact SLOWER than my Steady/Stable Vodacom Connection.... ugh...:sick:

I must admit, my Vodacom was also crappy last nite and I did not test the MTN properly. could be weather...
I did not test long, as I havent got a bundle installed (Airtime in drawer, waiting for Vodacom's to reach CAP)

So I'm going to use Vodacom (2000MB), and then MTN (2000MB) - and see which is the best, and go for it.

it's "internet" - in my research I found that "myMTN" are used for Cellphone WAP Settings - dunno what I did last nite, will check tonite and Post all Settings / changes.
 
The e620 tool does nothing for me except show the IMEI number and serial etc.

If I use Huawei Mobile Partner will I be able to load it separately and not need to flash anything?

More details, preferably in the E620 Tool thread please. Have you already had your card unlocked?

The version I uploaded recently installs to your PC only, it does not modify the emulated CD-ROM on the device.
 
This may seem odd but it is working, but accidentally.

If I plug in the modem and then wait a few seconds for the device to be found and then run HMC, I can connect.

If I wait too long and VMC Lite starts it won't work.
If I close the VMC client program it doesn't work.
If I close the minimised VMC it doesn't work.

[The errors are nearly always to do with device not found or registering a network]

What do I need to do. Speeds vary, but I got 1194/331 for the JHB test. I used the given MTN settings (with myMTN APN).

Prevent VMC Lite from running by disabling the drive letter assigned to the E272.
 
Using XP. I disabled the drive letter, but it appeared again when I restarted. Must be a better way.

If you did it right, Windows will remember that the drive letter is disabled for that instance of the device even through restarts. If you plug it in a different USB port, Windows installs a brand new instance of the device and assigns it a drive letter and you will have to go through the process of unassigning it again.

One other thing to check, click Start, Run and then type MSCONFIG, click OK, when System Configuration appears, click on the Startup tab, and uncheck any Vodafone related items.

I must have a special version of XP 'coz there is nothing Voda related there (does it have to be running to see it?). Also, I'm using the same USB port all the time. Mmmmm! I cannot swap between VMC Lite and HMP either. It is an either or situation.
BTW, I can use your tool just so long as I terminate HMP by ending the process to keep the connection alive.
 
A straight answer.

Here's your Problem:
MTN's APN is "internet" NOT "myMTN", and the dialup nr is *99#.

Close the Vodafone Software before running Mobile Partner
(Make sure, by pressing ctrl-alt-delete, and ending and Vodafone Software)

No, both "internet" and "myMTN" are valid APNs for MTN.

Correct, only one program can access the modem's diagnostic/monitoring port at a time.
 
Been playing with VMC. I've now used the Vodafone firmware VMC Lite to find out MTN data balance! Don't know how but I did.:D Should that be possible??

I also tried to send an SMS but I had the UK message centre set up.

Okay I see mine says 'myMTN' in the dashboard. Passwd *** so I'm
assuming password to be "mtn" or "MTN".

If I change it to "internet" is the password the same? whats the
difference? different login areas? :cool: ???

when I phoned(155 i think) to have my sim activated for 3G previously they activated it from their side? anyone know what the command to get those settings sent over the air are? I think the *123# is only gprs/wap but what about hsdpa/3g? or can they only activate it on the network from the operators side?

Apparently the "internet" APN was established for devices like the Blackberry.

You don't need to activate HSDPA or 3.6 (as you do on Vodacom). As long as you have the settings you are good to go.
 
E272 on MTN

Hi,

I believe all E272's from Vodafone are network locked, regardless of whether it's one sold in SA or not, they'll be locked to the Vodafone in that specific country, Vodacom in SA. Seems SA is bit of an odd ball when it comes to network locking as it's still standard practice in most countries around the world. Might be that we're just far behind the curve on the release of products in SA so we get ones with generic firmware. I got my E272 in the UK back in July 2007.
As for getting E272 to work without a hitch on MTN the best is to network unlock it using Kulankendi for 15EU, it's a hefty additional price to pay on top of the rip off price Vodacom is charging here for the modem. As at the time of this post you can get an E272 on eBay UK from mobilefonebuyer for 100GBP excluding posting which is usually another 10GBP, tack on another 200ZAR for the unlocking and you still come in about 700ZAR or more under what is being charged in SA for the modem. A guy contacted me from HK a while back about unlocking his E272 there and managed to get the service provider there to do it for him for free. I also got mine unlocked by Huawei directly for free, but I'm not sure how the 8 digit code is generated needed to unlock the device. So for now Kulankendi is still the easiest, unless Vodacom wants to play nice and do it for free since they're making more than enough off the modem as it is.
Alternatively you could just buy a Vodacom SIM card for 2ZAR and use prepaid vouchers. Just my 2cents worth.
