Only 51 percent of African National Congress supporters believe that party president Jacob Zuma is innocent of the fraud and corruption charges that were levelled at him, while 71 percent of ANC voters say they support him unconditionally.

This is revealed in the latest Ipsos-Markinor survey that looks into how South African voters perceive the ANC president.

Project manager Wayne Viljoen said the survey was conducted among 3 531 respondents between February and March. The respondents, he said, were registered voters of all races, and from rural and urban areas.

The survey found that 39 percent of all respondents thought Zuma was innocent of the charges, while 31 percent believed he should be made to face the music. The rest were undecided or declined to answer the question posed.

COPE and DA voters were more sceptical about the ANC leader, with 77 percent of COPE supporters believing he was guilty and 75 percent of DA voters agreeing with that sentiment.

"A general anti-Zuma sentiment seems to be the driving force behind why COPE supporters, whom traditionally would have voted ANC, are opting to bring out an anti-ANC vote."

Of ANC supporters that were polled, 33 percent were in favour of Zuma standing back as presidential candidate until the courts had cleared his name.

"The conclusion can therefore be drawn that there is a segment of ANC voters who feel that Zuma may not be as innocent as he is claiming to be and that he should wait to be formally acquitted after standing trial."

Only 52 percent of ANC members who responded to the survey, however, thought that the corruption charges were an attempt by Zuma's political enemies to discredit him.

Although the survey was conducted before the National Prosecuting Authority decided to drop charges against Zuma, Viljoen said the NPA's decision was not likely to alter the survey results much.

Wow... 71% of the ANC couldn't give a rat's rear if he'll drive the country into the ground. I wonder, has intelligent life ever been found in the ANC, or is there simply the odd involuntary twitch of a long forgotten wisdom?

As long as the ANC believes its a revolutionary organisation involved in some sort of struggle, and manages to convince the voters the same, the ANC will enjoy an uncontested reign.

The true defeat of the ANC lies in getting the voters to understand that there is no more struggle. As long as ****es like JZ keep rallying support by singing struggle songs and talking of revolutions and the like, the voters will blindly and loyally follow suit.

True - the ANC sheep couldn't care.
I don't believe the ANC sheep see anything wrong with Zuma accepting money for his car wash from Shaik. They instead choose to believe what Zuma says to them about jobs, poverty, housing, crime, etc.
They probably don't listen (or not understand) when the showered one makes ominous noises in the direction of the judiciary or whateva flies over their heads. I don't think the masses are stupid, but would rather focus on where the issues concern them most.

Topic is a bit misleading..... it should read 'How do ANC Voters perceive Zuma'

If you think about 30% is quite alot in ANC numbers. Out of the 10 million that voted for ANC in 2004, that means 3 million don't trust Zuma and will most probably stay away from the polls. I think that will have a major effect! Especially if DA are able to raise their votes and COPE as well. Big hopes for this election!!!!

Without realising that with AIDS shower boy Zuma at the helm they see an even greater decline in the things they focus on.
They be using the Zuma currency for all their luxuries.

Of course, the ANC believes they are South Africa

But the topic is also the headline for the news article, so misleading or not its not the OPs fault, thank the media.

Pardon me for correcting you but the masses ARE stupid. And on this continent the mass of the masses take stupidity to new heights. (Or should that be new lows?)

Why do we allow stupid people to run our country,

Because in a democracy everyone is allowed to vote and most voters are stupid. A qualified vote is what is needed. Same should apply to people who wish to have children.

Lol @ the mention of qualified vote. Just shows we might have gotten rid of the Nazis but there are still fascists about. And thats the reason people like Malema still have currency in 2009.

How about a qualified vote in terms of what you contribute to the economy etc etc... everyone gets a vote, but certain votes count more due to their contribution to the economy?

This would help because if you are making a contribution, it follows that you have some worth and capacity to reason. Stupid people though, who are merely a burden on society and have no idea of what they are voting for should not be permitted to vote at all. That goes for convicted criminals as well. By perpetrating a crime, however petty, you forfeit your privilege to vote. A simple IQ test would sort out the voters from the non-voters.

No, not an IQ test! Think how much time that would take! Especially as you'd have to teach so many people how to read and write first! And you'd have to take the IQ test every time you vote too, because who knows - you might have suffered a massive head injury in between elections!

Why not just measure the size of people's heads at the polling station? People with small or damaged heads don't get to vote - much simpler.
