How do software developers afford Cape Town rental

Nothing to write home about. :). Like your average suburb, I drive through it daily to pick my son up from the day mom. Traffic is a pain in some areas cause of cape gate being close.

I am in protea heights and its slightly cheaper, more Afrikaans. Vredekloof has lots of English speakers moving in.

Rule of thumb I have been told, closer you are to the n1, the more expensive it is.

Yes and no. We like the area we are in, but limited to a 4mb line, one block south and its fibre :)

I feel pretty safe here, but we don't go around sleeping with our doors open. Body corporate is really conscious of security.

People are hell of friendly. Even when they realize I don't speak the language. Ok, well except the older folks but I thinks cause they don't speak English.

Another thing I like about my estate is the kids play together. Group of 5 to 10, feels like a real community that I am used to seeing them on bikes and skate boards. Just the little feckers sometimes play till 11pm during school holidays.

I work in century city so traffic is a bitch, the SO just landed a new job in century city as well so we are going to look to buy a place out there next year.

I moved to the CBD last year because of the traffic after I started working in Century city and the SO works in the CBD. I literally have 2+ hrs a day extra. That is 10 hrs a week, 40 hrs a month. Imagine having 40 hrs more a month....

If the finances allows one day, I will probably like to buy this side as well(anything from Goodwood upwards to town).

I reap tears from hipsters struggling up the hills on their single speed bikes.

I repackage them and sell it as 'Beard Oil'.

Earns me enough for a 12 room place in Higgovale.

On weekends I buy a new Porshce and crash it for fun.
 
I used to rent in Claremont and Kenilworth as I worked in Newlands. Decided that I wanted to buy to I moved out to West Beach. There is a bit of a commute but there was no way I could get a house in the southern suburbs.

Why the hell would you rent a 1 bedroom flat for 9k in Woodstock. When you could get a 2+ bedroom place for that in Observatory, Mowrbray, Rondebosch or Claremont for that matter... I don't think you've done your homework here. That or your expectations are unrealistic and you want a pool, a gym and and and included.

I also think that a) you're probably bad at your job or b) lack experience if you're claiming you can only make 15k/pm.

All of the software dev's I know earn WELL above that. I'd expect you to be earning at least 30k+ with a master's degree.

Doesn't compute.

Yes, you can get a junior position where you'll be horribly unpaid. Yes, you can pay out your gat to live in the trendiest area of the city. Yes, you can try your hardest to make friends with snobs. And yes, you can decide to leave for work during peak traffic times. You can do this all in any place in the world, and it will be just as horrible as you'd expect.

Recently bought a place in Rondebosch after years of renting. It cost more than I was aiming to pay, but I'm very happy with the balance of access to the city and the suburbs, as well as easy rental / resale options in the future.
 
I have 2 potential job offers in the Cape Town CBD. I'm looking for somewhere outside of the cbd, but would like to use the bus/train to commute as there is no way in hell I'll sit in traffic (Currently live 2km away from where I work in JHB). Any suggestions? I think budget is about R8k

The best public transport is apparently MyCiTi so check for an area on one of the routes. Not much variety going to the CBD though.

Protea Heights is a decent area but it'll take you 2hours to get to the cbd in peak traffic. Brackenfell and Durbanville are also good areas but once again the traffic will be hectic. If you want to be a bit closer to town then check out Edgemead, Bothasig(the good areas) and possibly Burgundy Estate.

You could consider living on the west coast too. Yzterfontein is a bit far but the traffic isn't that bad if you take the N7 to the N1.

I stay in West Beach and it takes me about 45 min to get to Obs from about 6:10 in the mornings. If I leave at 3:55 I can get home in 35 min. Its all about hitting those sweet timing spots.
 
Moved closer to work last year. Hit my pocket for a six but we have much more time. Zero traffic. But I did struggle with the whole living now vs later issue.
