How DStv was started in a caravan

How about a REAL article about DSTV, one that would appeal to MYBB readers,

ie, What the different encoding codecs and proprietary encoding is/was and how it is/was cracked by clever local engineers.

Or how some of these engineers did not bother with the encoding, but cracked the decoders themselves.

Or how crappy the Explora decoder UI turned out when they started to design it locally.

Or how crappy and illogical the Explora remote turned out to be after years of users using the previous crappy remote standards.

Or how DSTV effed their subscribers up the ass by taking away decoders with enough tuners for a true dual view environment.

Or how DSTV effed subscribers with the "latest" Explore that does not even have a heartbeat RF port anymore - forcing users to rewire/replace LNB's to upgrade to this little box with dual view environs.

Mmm...

Very interesting... but at this late stage of the game I think everyone has pretty much gone sour on MultiChoice.
That's what happens when you abuse your monopoly position and fleece your customers.

So I own Naspers shares. Question for the community - how fast after the unbundling should I sell my Multichoice shares?
As soon as you buy them.

Dstv need to get on the page as some of the 1st world countries if they want to make themselves relevant again they need to start offering more than just satellite TV.

They should do what Sky, Virgin and other major TV companies are doing.

Bundling.

Get into a contract agreement with Vumatel or Openserve and give one combined rate for DSTV, Online tv such as netflix and showman as well as your fibre rental line and router.

If they offered an uncapped 100mb fibre line with Netflix, showmax, DSTV premium, DSTV Now and a Voip phone for something like R1500.00 then it starts to look more appealing to customers rather than forking out just R1000.00 for DSTV.

Just my 2 cents
Except that Sky gives it for free, something that's not feasible in SA.

Came here to just read how or why Naspers (already a major SA media company at the time) started DSTV in a caravan. But there's nothing to explain how DSTV was "started" in a caravan. Just that some early operations occurred in a caravan. That's clickbait, right?

Sky don't give it for free, all the packages I have seen and know of show that you can either get Sky TV separately and Sky Broadband separately but if you bundle them together you get a discounted price for having all your TV, Broadband and talk packages with them.

You still need to choose your TV package items (sport, cinema, catch up and such things (which they bill you accordingly) and then choose your Sky box and then choose your Broadband speed (which again they bill you accordingly). Then right at the end they discount a portion of it for getting all items with them.

Where did you see that Sky give it for free?

Here's there website

Has always been the case.

You should ask the question: Why is Naspers unbundling a cash cow? Will it still be a cash cow in the next 10 years?

Free Sky Broadband Unlimited for 12 months: Offer available to existing Sky TV customers in Sky Network areas switching their broadband, calls and line rental to Sky. You must keep Sky TV for offer period, otherwise you’ll be charged the standard price for Sky Broadband Unlimited (currently £7.50pm) or Sky Fibre Unlimited (currently £20pm). After 12 months, standard price apply for Sky Broadband Unlimited (currently £7.50pm with Sky TV and Sky Talk). Not available with any other offer. Sky Broadband Unlimited: Download speeds up to 17Mb. Speeds vary significantly with location. No traffic management policy or usage caps for Sky Broadband Unlimited. External Factors such as internet congestion and home wiring can affect speed. Further terms apply. Correct at 22 October 2014.

They are offering you free broadband for 12 months to switch you account and thereafter you pay for it after a year.

It is not free sweetie it is a marketing tool to get you to switch.

That's an interesting question. This is the company that let go of MTN because it was a loss leader. MC's days as a cash cow may be over but on the other hand with a good strategy in can remain an extremely profitable business.

Yes I can read pretty fine thanks, but you don't seem to comprehend. And there's no reason for the constant insults from you.

After 12 months you simple cancel or threaten to cancel. It's actually a competitive environment and they want to keep your business. And yes, it is free or show me where you pay anything for it.

Multichoice should also remember how they got to where they are. MNET was like a must to have, there was so much good content 24/7 on a single channel, there was not enough time to watch. Now there like a hundred channels with nothing good to watch. They forget what made them and is neglecting that same audience.

I still don't know how dstv was started in a caravan.
Where is this caravan?
Yes exactly!
A article with no real value! I have a book on how MC came into being with the real story. I could have written a better article than this piece of marketing BS!

Problem for Multichoice and bundling internet is that half the country cannot get ADSL because of stolen copper lines, about 2% can get fibre and LTE is simply too expensive if it's going to be used predominantly for video.

So there's no strategy they can apply in every scenario and the ideal is for them to connect the lower income subscribers which is exactly where infrastructure is pretty much non-existent.
