How DStv will fight back against Netflix

In August, Naspers announced it had created a new video unit for OTT service called Connected Video.

The Connected Video unit will run the Showmax and DStv Now services in South Africa, and will oversee development of new over-the-top services for the MultiChoice group.

Realistically their plan will be:
1) release an explora 2 and force everyone to upgrade
2) raise subscriptions
3) increase the number of repeats to make sure you've seen something
4) even more ads for dstv premium aired on premium channels
5) bitch and moan about competition

Don't forget price, there is no way in hell they will be able to beat netflix prices, even if they tried.

In summary... make more profit by supplying less value to your viewing customers for more money...
DSTV are confused who their customers are... they think it's the advertisers that are the customers.
How about:
1) Improve the existing slow explora - the interface is dated, slow, buggy and frustrating
2) reduce subscriptions to provide better value to your viewing customers
3) reduce repeats and drop junk channels to provide better value for your viewing customers
(It's not about quantity, it's about quality)
4) reduce the number of ads to provide better value for your viewing customers
5) learn from your competition, your viewing customers have options

We know how this bunch works, cry and cry about netfix.
Then show more ads, more replays and put the price up

ShowMax is not bad. It could be a real competitor with a bit of development.

Just bring the video quality up to par with Netflix and Amazon else it will remain option 3 for many.

Meh if Dstv wants to compete all they can really do is make an online streaming package for Supersport only for a reasonable price. Otherwise this poor new guy is just a new face on a sinking ship.

Even if they do that, it won't help. They are out of touch with their customers and in touch with their advertisers.

Option 3, how about option never, showmax has been trying to stuff their 14 day trial down my gizzard for months now, while there is DSTV in the house, I neither watch nor pay for it, not even the TV license.

I made it clear you want DSTV you pay for it period, the only thing I use the TV for is watching the cricket every now and then when SABC is showing it. Showmax is so dated and out of touch with reality.

Don't think there is much they can do. DSTV Now gives me Super Sport which is basically used for F1, UEFA and the odd global event like the Olympics etc.

Other than that there is nothing content wise worth watching. If it is feasible they should focus on sport and leave the rest to the "professionals".

But they won't. Fast forward a couple of years and the other providers will be broadcasting all the sport anyway and DSTV would've missed the boat yet again.

Sign up for Sling Orange, which is $15-$25 a month (can't remember). But you get ESPN2 where you can watch F1 and other sports.

People cutting the chord recently had very little to do with Netflix and more to do with their annual increases.

In short, we don't want to be Netflix. We'll keep reinventing ourselves. We want more repeats for more money.

Weird .... Sky in UK offers netflix as part of their package. The TV guide also shows netflix content (if subscribed)

And next year it will be increased again... blaming weak Rand, increasing costs, etc, pushing the top package to R1000/month. Meanwhile they laugh at the stupidity of those hangers-on willing to fund their luxury cars and building in Randburg
