How important is local content to you?

That's a weird position. I assumed the only reason anyone got shomax instead of netflix (or whatever) was because of the local content.

There's actually a ton of Hollywood stuff, but we've seen almost all of it.

I don't care for local content at all. If it's good I will watch it though, but I find that it rarely is.

My sister in law and my late FIL watched Kyknet almost exclusively.
If my dad watched TV, it would Afrikaans, so either SABC 2 or kyknet (if he had DSTV)

Nah, there's just good **** on there from HBO, Show Time, etc that you don't get on 'Flix.

I don't watch soapies so that rules out most. Then comes the ones that try to be funny, which they are mostly not (yes there were good ones but not any that I can say are airing new episodes now). Stuff like Carte Blanche (if it even airs, don't have any way to tune into local content via airwaves so don't know). I would watch, something stimulating. Local documentaries over history or nature I would watch, but one can only watch so much footage of lions going ROAARRR. Bring on the birds, the beetles, and some African folklore and the stories behind it.

Considering that 95% of content generated in the entire world is crap, adding local crap to that pile is not going to make much difference.

Local content in DSTV terms is going to be content catering to the masses.

The only way they can increase market share is to cater to the "black" market.
The white market is saturated - and decreasing share as users migrate to other platforms/countries.
The indian and chinese markets could be served with specific channels, but again, streaming...
Colored market / Afrikaans speaking market is badly served, and could do with channels, and have the money to pay for channels.

Major traction though would ultimately be the "black" market - which is price sensitive to the extreme. Simply re-broadcasting zim tv, and other regional tv channels would likely capture a good portion of that at little cost.

Ultimately they may survive if they lower pricing, adding production a la netflix is not a bad idea.
I think they also do own the rights to the SABC back catalog, so re-run's of orkney snorkey, 7 de laan etc wouldn't be out of order.

Once in a blue moon, there's a really funny Afrikaans show on Kyknet. But they are few and far between, and will definitely not motivate me to subscribe. I catch up on these shows on showmax (linked to the boss's account).

Don't watch TV at all. That means SABC, ETV, DSTV, TopTV, Whatever else that's available locally.

My TV is only there as a monitor.

ETA: Don't watch sport in general.
If I want to see local motor racing I visit the local circuit. Everything else is available on the internet.
