Hi guys,

I would like to get an advise on a 2nd hand Audi A5 of models between 2009 to 2011. I would like to buy one soon with reasonable kilos and FSH. My worry as per guys that never drove that car or Audi is that the service is too expensive and and every small part is expensive. Anyone who drove this car or knows anyone who drove it please tell me how much it'll cost for servicing intervals. Or any prons and cons I need to know on a 2nd hand Audi A5. My bad, I'm not that clued up as this is gonna be my first car except the ones I owned in Need For Speed. If you need more info please shout!

Thanks in advance.

Good Morning,

What kind of engine and gearbox is in the A5? Kilos?

At work we had a Nissan 1400 bakkie, and one day I took it to Nissan for a service, (in 2009) and it cost us R3500 for service, no funny things, just service. I couldn't belief that. I'm driving Audi's since 2004, and normal service with the agents cost R1500- R2800 on average. So service wise, seems better than cheap cars to me.

Audi looses it's value pretty quick, so if you buy second hand you would nearly always get bargains, lot of car for little money.
Also Audi's build quality are really good, so no funny rattles etc.

If I buy second-hand, I would open a 30dae notice account with my bank, put 30k in for those unexpected repairs. The expensive repairs can be covered by this fund then. Depending on engine and gearbox and your driving style, these are the things that would need replacement in the 100-200k bracket.
Waterpump, cambelt, tensioners, turbo, sensors, injectors, brake disks, clutch.

Depending on type of gearbox you can have a expense of up-to R150k if something goes wrong.

So you need to choose wisely I would think. (From the features)

I would buy another Audi, better the devil you know right?!

I recently purchased a 2011 A5 3.2 FSi Quattro Sportback with S-Line suspension.
Got B&O sound, Audi AMI and sunroof to boot. Bonus going pre-owned.

At first I disliked the vehicle. Coming from an A6 made it a bit difficult to adjust. As I forgot the A6 I started to love the A5. I am seriously besotted with this car now.

When the motor plan expires I take my cars to Auto Service Center in Edenvale. I don't make use of the dealer out of motor plan.
Service from Audi Airport is fantastic. No problems there.

This is my fifth Audi now (A4, A4, A6, A6 and now A5), and will continue to buy Audi. Love their vehicles. All pre-owned.

An A5 is a seriously nice first car! Please make sure you can afford such a vehicle...

Servicing costs are on par with everyone else. The only worry is if something expensive goes wrong (Turbo, DSG gearbox etc). Depending on the wheels tyres can be expensive too so dont forget to budget for that.

When the maintenance plan expire, get a good aftermarket warranty. As mentioned, find a good / reliable indy to take the car to as well.

I took warranties on both my Disco and A4 3.0TDi. The warranties (especially the disco) have paid themselves in full. On the Audi I had a claim for a rear door lock.

It's an Audi A5 coupe 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic (2010). But it seems like it's gonna be like a "wrong turn" if I go for it. I see that fixing it far more expensive than I can budget for. But I think I have to just make sure I get a healthy one once I decide to go for it. Otherwise, "hier kom ***"!

Thanks a lot for heads up. I think I'll pass then I'll buy a brand new in 2 years maybe.

Thanks a lot for your input. I think the best you can do is to give me the name or contact of a dealer where you buy your cars. Or maybe when I'm ready you can help me find the best deal.

About taking aftermarket warranty I think it's a good idea. That's what I was telling my boss last that it'll help if I take a car like that. And it's known for minor electrical issues that are need about 2K to about 8K.

Warranty was R7k for my A4.

Not bad at all! A5 might a lil more but it's a good idea to pay it cash and know that you are covered. For how many months were you covered for?
Most warranties are 2yr / unlimited kms.

Just check what and for how much you are covered. Also, after 2yrs you can renew the warranty for 2 more years. They normally cover cars up to 10yrs old.

I have a 2008 A4 B8 3.0TDi.

The A5 is basically an A4 coupe/Sportback/cabrio. Beautiful cars, but I'd find it hard to justify over a R30,000 - R50,000 cheaper A4 when they're so similar/identical from the inside.

The pre facelift models (LED dots) have aged very well.

The reason why I love the A5 Coupe is because it's a heads turner and my friends have the GTIs, Polos, BMWs and the Clios. I wanna be different like the phones I use. That car is a beast. I read somewhere someone saying the same about the pre-facelift. I'll my options very well.

That's great! After all the info and tips I got from you guys at MyBB I'm not scared to buy it after all. And I can tell you still happy with your A4 so far. That's some motivation right there!

Absolutely!

With more than enough power if I want to be excited.

By all means go ahead if you can afford to, but you can find some really good looking A4s for a lot less, with S-line kits (lowered sport suspension, body kit, bigger better rims). The difference is quite subtle and the average person would need to look a bit harder. It would not have the immediate presence of an A5, but you pocket R30,000 - R50,000.

S-tronic is quite common in the A4 B8 2.0Ts, Quattro less so. Same performance as the A5 I believe (155kW), and the same interior.

That's a great tip I've been trying to ignore. When reality kicks in thinking there's money back to my pocket it makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, it's a 155kW and getting the same performance and looks from A4 I might as well consider it.

Go drive them and look at the actual cars to decide.

You might find a stunning A4 vs a haggard A5 for the same price etc.
