How long before 4G?

Samsung Electronics Co. leads the way with the world's first successful demonstration of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology. The Samsung HSDPA phone reached speeds up to 3.6 Mbps.

There have already been several demonstrations of speeds up to 1.8 Mbps in the past, but Samsung's demonstration of HSDPA phone speeds of 3.6 Mbps is the industry's first ever. Web browsing, as well as streaming and downloading of contents, will be demonstrated compared by 1.8 Mbps and 384Kbps. 3.6 Mbps HSDPA handset allows users to download contents much faster than WCDMA or GSM/GPRS network. For example, downloading a 4MB mp3 file takes less than 10 seconds at 3.6Mbps HSDPA.

Samsung's in-house developed HSDPA phone is equipped with Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem MSM, MSM6280 solution.

One final point - although 3.5G sounds impressive, you should bear in mind that T-Mobile is currently rolling out a 4G data network in Prague, Czech Republic.

Now thats wat interests me - 4G!! 4G promises speeds of up2 20Mbps under perfect conditions. I mean ppl, if it takes u less than 10secnds 2 download a 4MB mp3 on HSDPA [under perfct conditions], how long u gona wait on 4G???

DoCoMo (or sumthn like dat), had initially said they'd offer 4G? arnd 2010 BUT now they say they gona have in 2006!!!! Dats kewl 4 da Japanese dont y'all think?

Good day,

This year you should see HSUPA and then in 2009 you should see Super 3G @100Mbps down and 50Mbps upload speed

Cool :D I'm sure ADSL and that will also keep up. The problem is, 100Mbps is great...but at R2 a MB (or a 3gig cap) it's useless! Hopefully we'll fix that.

Well you'll just have to wait and see can't go and tell you all of MTN plans I've already made mention of the idea of carry over bundles and multiple bundles which is already giving to much away

About 4G... hmmm

well all i can say is that when 3G came out, the company i work for worked in close ties with the installation of the new antennae for vodacom and at that time, the vodacom techy said that 4G technology was already out and that it will be relatively long time before they introduce 4G as they want to make money off the 3G tech. There is already 5G out but im sure it will be years before we see that cos we are (as a country) very slow on catching up with new tech. I mean there are countries with cable internet, T1, T3.....? Where's ours?

What? Rubbish. There is no 5g yet. In any country.
And SA is very, very quick on cell technology uptake

I know I shouldn't be saying this but I couldn't agree with you more cable is the way of the future I think in terms of fixed, reliable and really fast through puts speeds its the way to go the mobile space will always have variables e.g. number of users on the site at any given time, coverage, geographical area the amount of E1's available equipment and many other things..................

MTN are in the process of self provisioning and once that's completely up and running then you'll see a lot more movement in the Wireless space

Agreed!!
We far ahead than most of the world, and not far from the best in terms of cellular!! (Japan excluded)

Just shows where SA could be in other spheres if it wasn't for Telkom etc.
