How many people run SSDs?

Ok, question, as I still use Win XP on my 3 year old 2gig mem quad machine... would it make a difference or would I also have to upgrade to Win7 for better performance

Upgrade to windows 7, it is far better than xp. Xp doesn't have trim i am not sure if that even matters anymore but the ssd will should make a huge performance difference. I am not totally sure though because i was using vista when i got my first one and for vista to run like a dream you must know xp will kick ass i reckon :D because vista was a bulky slow ass OS, slower than xp but on ssd steroids it was a different beast.

Also chuck in a couple gb more memory, cheap now.

Perhaps RPM could start a poll:

Was your ssd worth the money? I wonder how many no answers there would be.

I have the same drive. This is my 2nd SSD that I bought @ R2500. :)
 
SSD is a luxury that not everyone needs. Sure I can imagine there are those who need it but for most it's just a luxury they could afford. It's a bit senseless to ask someone who currently has a ssd if it's necessary, obviously they will say it is, when in fact, it isn't.

There are other more important things, an ssd is always your last upgrade if you can afford it. Why? Well, if you only have a normal 7200rpm OS drive, and you never got use to the luxury of an ssd, your pc will feel perfect to you as is, and there are other things that require better components which are better investments.

As much as people will say it's a necessity, it really isn't and you should only get one if you've got the cash to dish out for it. Personally, I go for quantity over a bit of a speed boost that only so much of your system can use given the fact that it's so expensive for so little space.

To top it off, how many gb's will games such as BF3 require on install? If you can't afford 128gb's, then to me, it's a waste of an upgrade. I prefer to have a few games installed at once rather then having to install/uninstall/battle with steam/etc.
 
Been using one of the first SSD's on the market, the Samsung 60 GB, for more than three years. I won't ever get a hard drive for a laptop again.

From what I've heard, I would far rather spend R4k on an SSD than R4k on a graphics card. I mean, it looks like its the single biggest performance upgrade that you can give your PC.
 
I am running a 256Gb Samsung SSD that came out of a Dell laptop in my home PC at the moment. Performance is awesome but if you use your PC for browsing and WoW it is kind of a overkill. Selling it for 4k or nearest cash offer if anybody is interested...

Agreed, will make your whole pc feel like its been upgraded, for general use (opening apps, files, etc).

Expensive per GB yes, like RAM is, RAM is even more expensive per GB, but you just can't think about it like that.
 
It is always going to be about the money.

My cousin recently bought himself an ipad2 and hates it. Why? Because he had immediate buyers remorse since although he says it is great to use, he just needed the cash for other more important things. Now, he can't really enjoy using it since it reminds him of financial issues and wants to sell it.

My opinion would be to treat it as a luxury item, rather than an essential one, and set aside money accordingly. That way, you can just enjoy the benefits of a SSD without having to worry about justifying it to yourself over other needs and making sure the performance gain is worth the money, etc...

so you rather spend money on your 28TB's than a SSD... Im sorry but that is quite a fail.

I'd also be against SSD's when I got my personal savings invested in 28TB of mechanical hard drives... lol

oh and by the way I do own one. and you wont be able to appreciate the upgrade quality of this component until you own one yourself. if you into "quantity over quality", by all means go buy another couple of TB's :p

Yeah thats true I suppose. If I buy one now, I can pay cash for it, but then the repairs my car needs (likely to be about R15k unless a miracle occurs) will have to go on my credit card.

I honestly fail to see how improving your entire computing experience using a SSD is worth LESS than keeping an entire dusty old series of Smallville and Scrubs episodes somewhere on a drive (you know, just in case you want to waste another 6 months of your life on something you already watched somewhere in the near future).
Seriously. Why the hell do people need so much space? I know, to keep tons of MOVIES and SHOWS somewhere because we just looooove collecting that crap and impressing other people with it.

I have an SSD in my Notebook and I absolutely love it.
I might not be able show off my 6 Bazillion Trillion Pokemon episodes to someone, but when I need to show someone at work my latest changes to our migration model in Excel, and that image slams into their retinas in less than a second I always get a smile on my face.

In fact, I've had my SSD now for about 7 months, and just Yesterday I was sitting at my desk and thinking about how awesome it is that at least once a day now for the past few months there's always a moment where I'm aware of the fact that my machine runs as smooth as silk. It truly is worth it.

I find if I collect series's, I never have the time to watch them. I only keep a select few.

dont get me wrong dude. im all for keeping up to date with the latest series and movies, in HD.

I have a media player with 1.5TB which a cart around which has all my movies on.

Then another 3.5TB for series, game images, etc etc etc
