In light of the savings thread I wanted to resurrect my old thread about this...but can't find it. :o

So...cash on hand/rainy day fund.

Measured in terms of months worth of expenses at normal spending levels not absolute amount...to keep it comparable.

Always have a few hundred in my wallet and then we have a few grand stashed in the safe at house for in case of some unplanned emergency. Most of this is from stuff we sell. So whenever we sell white elephants around the house or things like strollers, baby chairs not being used by the kids anymore as they grow up. That cash goes directly into our emergency kitty.

Granted we have spoiled ourselves from the kitty a few times.

Edit: In terms of months. Probably more than a month in the safe.

I generally have around R1k-R2k on me which is stupid, I should just swipe card. Then stashed about 6 months worth.

R 50 plus some loose small change. Only have cash on me when travelling and then never more than R 500.

Barely any, as someone said that's my credit cards job. Max I'll have is less than a few hundred.

None at all.
It's very rare that I have actual cash on me.
Everything card or snapscan.

nothing
Which is great at the robots. I just wave one of my cards at the beggar

I think you misunderstood the question... or maybe I did :erm:. I think the OP meant if you lose your job now, how long can you sustain without any income.

I like to have cash on hand (even though I've got plenty of credit card credit available).

Currently have (the equivalent of) around R15k in cash, some in my iPad bag and some in my wallet.

The extra money in my bond, which I try to keep at around 2 - 3 months net salary.
If it gets to 3+ months without a plan of what to do with it, I invest it in an ETF or similar.

If you mean how much cash I have access to immediately should things go south: about half my bond. 2 years of expenses, maybe, if we suddenly become very frugal.

If you mean how many banknotes I have in my wallet: between R200-R500 at any time.

Knowing the OP seems like he's knowledgeable on finances, has a busy job and travels regularly, I'm guessing he's got more that half a months wages if he loses his job...

About half a month.
