How much do you pay for rent?

Probably around that, and nope, it's not even that great. Tiny 3 bedroom flat with a small living room and kitchen in a dodgy area.

Really?? How can you pay R36K rent for a place in a dodgy area; surely you can get better? In SA you can rent in the absolute best suburbs if you had that kind of budget.

Then I guess people earn top dollar (or actually top pound) over there in order to be able to afford the places that they do.

In what part of London do you live ?

R7500 pm, excluding everything else... Gordon's Bay. The place is not big… but suits my required space.

R4000pm flat in Drama Street Somerset West including garage. 2 bedrooms, ground floor, about 90m

My bond on my new house (3 bedroom) in Somerset West is R5800 ! Are you renting in Harbour Island or up on the mountain??

R8400 a month, fully furnished. Including water, lights and DSTV. 76 sqm. Sunninghill.

R1800 per month minus lights/water. Moved out of my parents house and am now renting a double-garage from some old Charou couple in Chatsworth. The aunty makes a top chows every day, and she does all the laundry and irons the clothes. Weekends the ballie buys a bottle and we dop and play thunee till midnight with the local laaitjies.

Best place I rented my elderly landlady would call me over to help her polish off her 3rd bottle of tassies each night. Lots of freedom when your young to rent like you are - enjoy it :)

I'm not fully sure if the rent is exactly 36k for the owner, I doubt it, but all I know is that the three of us pay 800 pounds a month.

This is in Greenwich, South East London.

It make me sad when I think about what I could get in SA for the same money

R4400 incl. water, excl. electricity (pre-paid). 71m2 flat close to the East Rand mall.

I do not even want to know what people pay to rent properties in those nice areas of London where you see the Georgian style apartments/houses !!

I assume that most of these rental figures include water, lights, refuse, etc. because the figures are otherwise flipping scary!

I'm paying around R8100 per month for a 3 bedroom, 240m2 house, double garage and 1000m2 property in an average suburb in Pretoria.
That includes:
- R6100 for the bond and building insurance (R690,000 left on bond).
- R1500 for water,lights,rates and refuse.
- R500 per month for maintenance.

R6500 p/m - I would estimate it at 90sqm, 2 bedroom apartment in Gardens Cape Town, with a parking bay. Water included.

I somewhat disagree with the earlier post that said it was best to buy. I think that is an emotional response to physically being able to see / touch / experience the property you are buying. It does not make sense to buy imo unless you are planning on staying put for a long while.

I do own an apartment, and am currently renting it to an awesome tenant. But the initial cost of that apartment coupled with the running / upkeep cost while I lived there means that I would be better off now if I had rented instead of bought.

The apartment will now slowly start paying for itself, and is becoming an investment, but only because I am not living there.

So my advice, if you are buying as an investment and don't need to live in the place, brilliant. If you are buying to settle down, that's also fine. But if you are buying as an investment and need to live in the place to make it work, rather invest the additional amount you would be paying in Satrix 40 or something like it.

I think you will see a much better and more fluid return on your investment if you go that route.

How long ago did you buy, and for how much?

I bought the house for R830,000 in 2009 and put a R164,000 deposit down.
I was renting a small garden flat in Highveld, Centurion in 2008/2009 for R2700 all inclusive.

R6700 p/m, 330 sqm, 3 bed, 2 1/2 bath, lounge, dining, tv room, kitchen, laundry, office, entertainment area with bar, huge lapa, double tandem garage, 1000 sqm stand. Excl W/L and R/T.

I'm not currently renting but I would consider the suburb I live in to be somewhere between mediocre and average. My neighbour rents his house out for R13500 pm excl. W+L. Also around 240m² on a stand about 1000m².

we charging R5250 rent for unit inside a complex.
105 sq/m,
2 bed 1 bathroom.

We rented 4 bedroom,3 bathroom, study, entertainment room, 1 x garage for R6000 for 6 years, place was massive and our landlady never increased our rent in all the years we were there. I could have kicked myself when I added up all the months so we bought, bond is R7000, pretty much the same size, less entertainment and study but have a double garage, pool, have to pay rates and have less garden space to maintain.

R3950 excl. Elec. Bartlett JNB East Rand. Upstairs 80m2 ish. 1 carport.
R4600 incl. Elec. Ground floor Glen Ashley DUR. 1bed 66m2.
R5000 excl. Elec. Umgeni Park DUR. 2 bed 90m2 upstairs. 1 covered parking.

Good idea for a sticky. I'm sure many people moving around SA could benefit from this info.

Must be quite a juggling act keeping all those wives ignorant and happy.

R5500 for a two bed, one bath duplex with a parking under a carport. 24 hour security and water and electricity included. it is about 150m from my son's school, close to shops and between Jet Park and kraft road offramps so easy access to the highways.
