How much does your ISP shape your traffic?

Yes, it is on a 1meg line. I don't mind shaping during the day as I am at work. But I've been home the last two weeks and I tested by downloading and like I said, I never had a problem with speed.

@Rouxenator, how much do you download per month???

Our prioritisation will all depend on what account you're on. Would be interested to see which account was used for this test.

I'm taking a guess here, that the test account was run off a Home account running off a silver priority - giving p2p "Best Effort" service. If we move up to Home Pro it'll be on a Medium level and Platinum it'll be pushed up to High. These priorities are also dependent on how busy our network is at the time.

From the article:

"We conducted our own tests in the morning between 08h30 and 10h00 on a 4Mbps ADSL connection using an MWeb uncapped account, a Telkom uncapped account, and a capped WebAfrica Titan DSL account."

QED

besides when Seacom went down, I haven't noticed any shaping recently.......Mweb 1024kbps uncapped

Shaping is not the big issue slowing things down these days.

#^%@! Telkom overloading their exchanges is a major headache.

Having a 4Mb/s during work hours is absolutely useless these days and after hours it is only a little better.

Gone are the days when you got a solid 3.2Mb/s at any time, day or night. You are lucky if you get anywhere close to 2Mb/s now.

This shows you are not even getting half of what you are paying for.

(In case you are wondering, the SAIX-based account gives the same results.)

have you tried also adding 2 threads pointing to the mweb news servers? they running at good speeds most of the time.

I cant download from the mweb news servers for some reason, my news reader gives error STATUS CODE 0. Therefore I'm using astraweb instead

Jeff, how do I check under which of those categories my account falls? I'm also using the Titan Data package from WebAfrica. I'm guessing it's the same as Home, but not sure.

Titan falls under Silver.

I've been downloading quite a bit the last two weeks (during the day) and my speed has constantly been 102 - 105 KB/s (including torrents). Guess I've just been lucky. MWeb must be doing something right.
Not shaped on torrents during the day???? I'd like to know how you tested.

So would you say that account is not suitable for torrents - torrent speeds run 'into the ground' is quite a strong deterrent.

WA has gotten really bad lately. I'm struggling just to load gmail or view MyBB, nevermind torrents! Such a pity, they used to be good...

I am quite glad to see that my ISP is actually offering 'Unshaped" BW. Always get close to maximum line speed.
