R20 million at the 4% rule is R800k for the year.
That leaves you with R500k after Kieswetter grabs his share. R500k is not nothing but you will hardly be able to live in luxury with that. You will still have to drive an old Polo and rent a flat.

The 50 certainly would do

But in all honesty if I can buy a less than 5 bar house, and have around 500k a year after tax I'd be good as gold

Nearly where I am now, minus the paid off house and about a 100k.

Assuming the R800k is all captial gains, and you are in the highest tax bracket of 45%, you would come out with R656k.

So, will you be able to live in luxury with R656k (assuming your sums are correct}?

In South Africa you will never have a normal luxury life in future. Will, however, need more than R100m to leave the country and live that life abroad.

ANC: A million rand isn't cool. You know what's cool? A billion rand.

Single guy, 50k after tax would be plenty. Of course more would be even better.

Other: Around R2.5 million. If you don't have to work you don't need new fancy clothes, much petrol if at all etc. etc.
Problem is if you don’t work, you’ll have free time, and free time without money to spend is not that enjoyable. No sense giving up work to sit at home trolling BusinessTech. You’ll want to go traveling, dining, and doing other stuff.

Its difficult. I mean one good walk through a mall with Gucci, Versace and Burberry stores and then getting back on your black yacht is going to eat a lot into that. Alas, I would have to go for More than 50...

Think even if I was a multi billionaire I'd still shop at MR Price sport

Nothing better than kort broek en plakkies

But you personally. You must have some preferences.

I know people might roll their eyes at this; but what I currently make a year, is enough for me. I spend less than I earn and save a fair amount each month. I also have over a months gross salary as an "Oh **** fund" - incase I need something, like a new tyre, or vet bills, etc, etc - so I don't live paycheque to paycheque.

I have a decent standard of living and all our needs are taken care of. Money is not something I worry about at all.

We have two cars, one is 10 years old, the other slightly older - both paid off and do the job. No need for anything more.

One of them sits in the garage (depending which one we use for the week) and so, buying a newer, fancier car seems silly and wasteful.

More would be nice.. but I'd just stick it into savings - maybe do the house up a bit more. But meh... not high on my list.

Now, what I earn a year, to some might be little and they'll say they can't survive on that. As I say.. all subjective.

You make this way too emotional. You don't have to justify your living costs. No one is out to get you.

It could be R10 000, it could be R15 000. Every person is different and all questions is always subjective.

No matter how little or how big, everyone has an income they consider good enough for their needs
