How much MTN paid for Afrihost

So Afrihost is valued close to a billion Rands?

Not too bad for a company that took the market by storm a few years back and were described as unsustainable.

Well apparently it's closer to a trillion Rand :
MTN says that its acquisition of a controlling stake in Internet Service Provider, Afrihost, amounted to R408 million. This places the valuation of Afrihost at the time of the sale at R816 billion.

lol typo

I think it means that MTN just overpaid based on the stake they claimed in the company. If they had bought the whole company I don't believe it would be anywhere near that amount.

MTN bought a stake & it suddenly got complicated to be with Afrihost mobile. We need straightforward packages that offer value for money, not the mumbo jumbo that's happening there now!

well, lets see. since mtn bought them, what has happened?
in my office there was 8 loyal customers on them with ADSL all 8 of us had mobile data.

today there is one left on ADSL.

7 of us has left afrihost. some of us has even moved back to mtn for data because the Afrihost service was simply that bad.
mtn was throttling the apn insanely. for example, on Afrihost I would get 1 meg down on HSDPA. change to mtn get 10. in the same place. go back to Afrihost 1 again.

we logged tickets, ranted, raved, called, but all for nothing. Afrihost turned into a mini MTN. so we left. most of us went webAfrica actually...

Well... It's not exactly sustaining... since MTN has been helping afrihost everything has gone to hell.
I'm sure they'll loose the afrihost branding as soon as most of the customers have left.

But thats my world and my experience of afrihost... not sure of others experience.

I'm really sorry you had this bad experience. That really shouldn't happen, as far as I am aware the APN gives you full access to the MTN's network, the same as directly with them. I am not sure what process was followed here but this is something we could definitely take up with MTN, based on the evidence and try to resolve with them.

I'm also sorry to hear that so many of you have left us. I can't say much but I believe this may be our biggest year ever. With MTN's support we have some great things planned for the future and I believe we'll fulfil our client's belief in the values and beliefs that have won their trust and loyalty. I hope that when that happens you'll be one of the people we are able to win back :)

We have no plans to rebrand or integrate with MTN, beyond the statutory requirements for financials/corporate governance, etc. Our agreement with MTN is that we keep doing what we're doing, otherwise MTN would have just expanded there own operation to compete with us rather than acquire us. It's just good business to let us continue to flourish in the market segment we're in so that MTN can focus on where they are good.

Oh I didnt mean the re branding will be a choice :)

It's a ceaseless source of astonishment how different our experiences can be.

I've had not the slightest issue with Afrihost. Their service just works. In years I've only ever made two calls to Support, and things were resolved within minutes.

I understand that there are different packages with different features, rates and prices. I don't expect an 1100cc package to perform like a 401 cubic inch V8. And i wouldn't dream of complaining when it doesn't.

Since MTN has taken over, things have got worse.

My speeds are terrible and dont always get acceptable feedback.

Why pay so much unless you are only planning on improving the company?
It was a waste of money as service went backwards and they lost a lot of subscribers.

That's definitely not the sort of experience that we want our Clients to have!

If you ever receive a response you are not happy with, please let one of AfriPeoples know! We'll gladly look into the query, and see where we can improve the response.

I can honestly say that we haven't lost any more clients since the MTN Acquisition on average each month, than before MTN purchased a majority share in Afrihost.

I can't speak for MTN, but I believe that Afrihost represents a segment of the market that MTN has until now had difficulty penetrating, and by acquiring Afrihost it allows MTN to broaden its market share.

You are a brave soul for taking all the flack on behalf of the company. I hope they reward you handsomely.

But you are bleeding clients, no?

I see myself as a fairly loyal client once I decide to take my business to any service provider or merchant. It is a lot of trouble to navigate others' offerings, but I am slowly losing confidence in Afrihost.

Surely Big Daddy cannot be happy with the performance of their acquisition?

well i'll be back from next month so really hope everything is back to normal, the uncapped i have now is a bit pricey and looking at my usage i might as well go back to capped as i dont really use much data.

Once again to say "Bleeding Customers" is slightly misleading, over the course of any given month we will always have Clients leave Afrihost and Clients join Afrihost, and this ratio has really not changed much, I think there is maybe a perception that we are losing Clients in significant numbers, but I can assure you it is definitely not the case.

Once again I cannot speak for MTN, but I do get the feeling that they have been satisfied with Afrihost, there are quite a few cool projects in the pipeline that I don't think would be if they weren't satisfied with us.
