I just got my BSc in Computer Science and will be earning pretty well for a starting salary. I do believe that a solid education will never let you down, and was fortunate enough to be able to go straight to varisty from high school. From what i have seen with the people in my class, you will earn 10k p/m take home (maybe a bit more) straight out of varisty with a BSc Honours. There is also a large potential to grow in corporate business. I do think that experience is important when someone hires you, but since they probably have to teach you exactly what they do they rather have someone with a university degree who has proven that they can study and has a willingness to learn... There is always exceptions where the people that get hired with degree have no clue how to do what they have learnt ( i do see people like this in my class as well).

...and so do I....
(albeit that I do not work in SA... but I'm still a SA resident. Didn't move to another country, just working there every other month)

I know this has been said before - but people live according to their salary - A person who earns a R100,000 usually also doesn't have money near the end of the month - its just different lifestyles, bond/rent is more, vehicle's cost more, etc....

28 yrs old, never earned more than R8k basic/take home

wow. if you combine my salary (24, programming certificate and 5 years of technician experience) with my fiancé's (24, honours in microbiology), then we almost make what you earn.

perhaps i should make a sign that says "will fix computers and program for R9k" and sit at an intersection?

i can't find the smiley (frowny?) for poor, so i'll just use sad - :(

What is an investment car? I seriously doubt Golf and Polo GTIs fall into that catagory. Besides, cars are almost always an expense. I should be putting away R5.5k but I only manage R1.5k currently. My RA is at liberty life and my investment is with Alan Gray, I think the portfolio is called Stanlib, I guess they have some fruit shares yes :p
Face. Wall. Ignored.

Problem spotted. Why do you have 2 houses with a combined income of R60k?

Sorry, was in a rush to get to training and didn't put enough detail into my initial description.
Both the places we own are being rented out (naturally for less than the bond *sigh*) and are investments for the future. We're currently living with my fiance's mom and supporting her and my fiance's younger sister, which counts as our "rent" for living here and works out cheaper than renting a place of our own to accommodate ourselves and our pets due to current high rental prices for what we're after. We choose not to stay in one of our owned places as they're miles away from where we currently work.

That's why I only have 1 car (fully paid) no kids and a house of 1.1m.
In my case things got worse when my wife decided to start her PhD... so now she is an expence too. At least it is a good excuse not to have kids :D I hate kids...

However this is what bugs me: Most respondants seem to gross between 15k and 30k. Even if you nett 30k how can you afford : a car, a house, life insurance, retirement annuity, house insurance, car insurance, municipal costs, petrol, internet, cellphone, groceries, electricity..... it is impossible ! :(

Not exactly impossible, but damn close. I take home ±13k am 7 or so years from owning my house (got it when you could still get a decent place for 200k ±8years ago, worth 800k easily now woot) almost own my 210k car and have less than 10k other debt. I spend my time playing WoW, and visiting more websites than is sane :o , as those are about the only pleasures I can afford currently other than my once a month fly fishing weekend with costs split between two to four other fisherpersons. It is all down to lifestyle, I am mostly happy and am living comfortablish (naw I know). The only thing that is really killing me is the price of fuel, it is getting really hard to just get to work daily and I have a really far 5 km commute :P.

Don't get me wrong I am quite happy, I have a stable job, all the insurance stuffs I need in case, have great friends. If this economic crash hadn't happened now though I would be hip deep in the cr4p. I was planning on selling and moving to a city so that I could get some security certs done over 12-18 months. Good thing I listen to loads of podcasts and noticed the downfall before I took the plunge.

I'm currently a developer with 2 years exp, getting 15k, I have a degree + MCTS. The car is paid off, currently save R7k a month, and pay myself R1500. I live with my parents but currently pay all the bills which comes close to R4k which is as good as rent. It would be hard to live alone earning less than 20k unless you downgrade your lifestyle.

 wow, 7K a month, that's a lot of money hey, you must have saved at least R150K already

lol only started that mid last year, during my first years of working I just bought everything I wanted, now theres nothing much else I can justify buying e.g. I can get a bigger lcd tv, but the purchase isnt justifiable.

15k gross or net?

Indeed those estimates are a bit too much I think. You can get away with 2k for something decent, even if it is second hand.

I think he included everything in those prices, not just the cost of the car itself.

R5k isn't a lot for a car+insurance+petrol+maintenance. Depending on monthly mileage of course.

R100k car is around R2000/month, R500 for insurance, R1500 for petrol. That's 4k before maintenance. Very dependent on mileage. Petrol price also dropped a lot, which helps.

I'm planing to buy a second hand car on the second half of this year (maybe September), probably a tazz. Anyway, i went to hippo.co.za to find out how much it would cost me to insure a 2005 second hand toyota tazz and the cheapest insurance that came out was for about R930 a month, that's the conprehensive insurance by the way and I've never had insurance, at least not yet. I was just wondering if the R500 insurance you mentioned above is the standard price for insurance or not.
