How much tax do you pay?

Norway, taxes 50%, free school, university, medical, actual police, STATE PENSION. hmmm

AND students get PAID for going to university and passing with good marks.. Netherlands too, the UK are busy implementing it at university levels.

- all that really remains is car allowance, and most people know that it's a matter of time before that's a thing of the past as well.

All ready 'gone'.
2007 = 60% of allowance taxable but claimable if you can prove your kms.
And increasing the private kms by 12.5% means you have to have a log book now.

2008 will see further adjustments and there is news that the employer must control the log book. (Maybe time to go back to company cars? Nope, companies don't like it when their cars are the only cars that can do 0-100km/h in 8 secs in reverse :D.)

I would like to see a massive overhaul of the tax system: a complete breakaway from the norm.

Something like the abolition of all income tax and with an increase of the VAt rate to something like 19-21%. That way almost everyone will be contributing to the state coffers. Essentials like bread and milk etc should have a lower VAT rate of say 6-8%.

One would probably then find that the total tax collected would far exceed the current amounts of income tax and VAT combined which would then lead the way to a lowering of the VAT rate slightly. The actual figures here are hypothetical but you get the general idea.

It really irks me that so few support so many....

If everyone contributed, everyones contribution would be reasonable and bearable. The hard working man in the street could then lay claim to perhaps 80 cents of every one of his Rands instead of 65 cents.

Tax? Oh yeah, that stuff that a portion of my freelance bux always got taken off for.
But in terms of 'tax returns' - na, never done that - managed to operate beneath
the radar for a couple of decades, and never filed any tax returns. I could tell you
how, but then I'd have to kill you :)

You're not paying taxes? That must be fun! I'd think twice before shouting it off the rooftops on a public forum if I were you, though.

Turd. :)
LG not in SA.
He has tea and scones with George at the White House now.

Besides in the USA AFAIK they don't tax you to death like SA - 10% I think? At that rate everyone would be happy to pay.

Rather stupid to admit that in a public forum, even if you are in the USA. And why you are even proud of committing a criminal offense? You're like Person aka Brian Gibello, recently arrested in Boston for credit card fraud.
No wonder you believe in a system of anarchism. You'd like all the chaos so you wouldn't have to pay tax

At least it explains some of your views i.e. "the government is out to get you" mantra.

Here is something: Why not register yourself a Cc and contract yourself to your current company (on the basis it is water tight or else they fire you). You'll have more tax deductions available to you?!
Have fun paying fines. SARS closed that loophole a few years ago. Plus (certified) Labour brokerage firms are inspected with microscope+CAs.

Do us a favor and explain how. Let's see if you actually know anything about tax.
Dividends. Especially since SCT is being phased out.

Actually not. If they were smart they could manage to pay less than someone on minimum wage.
Minimum wage earners don't pay income tax.

STC only being phased out from October and will be replaced by a withholding tax. Secondly the funds out of which dividends was paid already subjected to corporate tax and dividends then subject to STC.

Paid your tax by PAYE. Might have gotten something back if you submitted a tax return. Now if you had some money and wanted to take sum to Uncle Sam, getting a tax clearance might be a problem. :)

But I was referring more to legal tax evasion, the way 'rich' people do it as referred to in noxibox's post.

There were plenty of ways to route money such that little to none of it went to the government.

Were or are? If the loopholes have now been closed my original point still stands that had they still been in the country working and earning money the government's tax revenues would have been substantially greater.

They still VAT and other things.

I'm intrigued. How are the rich avoiding paying taxes? I disagree, but apparently you have the inside scoop.
